Brummies left to rue jinx
Wednesday 11th June 2008, 6:15AM BST.
Birmingham’s amazing injury jinx struck again during their 51-41 defeat at the Isle of Wight.
Both James Birkinshaw and Lee Smart crashed out of the meeting in separate incidents and are now doubtful for tonight’s meeting with Workington.
Birkinshaw suffered an ankle knock in his opening ride and has vowed to race if at all possible against the Cumbrian club, while Smart suffered a suspected concussion.
Inspirational BRC Roofing Brummies skipper Jason Lyons was once again at his brilliant best ,with five straight wins in his 17-point haul.
Belle Vue’s Nick Simmons also proved to be a good guest rider with 12.
Heat 13 was the killer blow, when the Islanders secured a 5-1 through Jason Bunyan and Krzysztof Stojanowski to go 12-points up.
Simmons did well to recover from a 15 -metre handicap to finish second as a tactical substitute in the penultimate race, before Lyons gained a consolation win for the Brummies in the last race.
Isle of Wight: Jason Bunyan 12+1, Krzystof Stojanowski 11+2, Glen Phillips 10+1, James Holder 8+2, Cory Gathercole 8+2, Andrew Bargh 2+1, Paul Fry R/R.
Birmingham: Jason Lyons 17, Nick Simmons 12, Craig Watson 6, John Oliver 4+1, Lee Smart 2+1, James Birkinshaw 0.
