McCarthy wants Kightly talks

Friday 6th June 2008, 11:35AM BST.

kightly.jpegWolves manager Mick McCarthy has offered to sit down with Michael Kightly in a bid to resolve the issues troubling the winger.

In-demand Kightly did little to quell speculation over his future by claiming earlier this week that there are “a few things he is not happy about” at Molineux.

This is bound to have been noticed by rumoured suitors Blackburn, Everton, West Ham and Middlesbrough.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey will hold talks with the England under-21’s agent Robert Segal in a couple of weeks in a bid to resolve the issues.

When asked about Kightly’s comments, McCarthy indicated he wants keen to draw a line under the matter even quicker if possible.

He said: “If that is the case then as always we will sit down and talk to him about it. What we want is happy players. I want Kights to be a happy player because he is one of our best ones.

“Myself, Steve Morgan and Jez – we are on it. Like anybody else they come and talk to us. If we can help we can help, and if we can’t there’s not a great deal we can do about it. Happy players make for a better club.”

McCarthy reiterated the club has no intention of selling any of its stars, insisting the best way for them to play Premier League football is by winning promotion at Molineux.

He said: “There is nobody leaving anyway. Steve and Jez have already said that so you may as well hear it from me. Why would we want to sell anybody?”

Once again, the E&S trying to make a story out of nowt – it’s almost becoming a self-perpetuating truth now. Reading very thinly between the lines, MM starts his sentence with the words ‘If that’s the case..’ which suggests to me that this is probably the first he has heard of the story. If there truly was something to be concerned about I think he’d be one of the first to know. I wish the E&S would stop publishing this sensationalist drivel – all it does is incite the cerebrally-challenged amongst the Wolves ranks to start spouting off garbage about how we should get rid of Kites immediately, no loyalty etc etc. For a supposedly impartial newspaper it seems to want to create dissention from very little when it comes to Wolves.. and folk accuse it of being the ‘Express & Dingle’? Pah!

Last season he was injured for a large part and he was paid, he had costly medical treatment no doubt and now there ARE ISSUES!

These footballers don’t seem to understand the word LOYALTY. If I sign a contract in my business for a period of time, there is no way I could go back and ask for more money, just because I’m being paid to do what I am employed to do.

There’s probably more than an element of truth regarding all these Michael Kightly stories and my guess is that the lure of a chance to play in the Premiership with West Ham will sway his decision.

At WHU he would be closer to his family ties and for an ambitious player it can’t have escaped his notice that with a few good performances for West Ham all the London journalists will be writing him into the main England team as a replacement for David Beckham in the future. No one should underestimate the power of the London Hacks !!

Not trying to stir things up – but why do you think the Kightly story made the press in the first place ??

Even if he has “issues” they could have been dealt with in-house without him or his people going to the media first. The club now has to answer these “issues” in public.

Is Kites just alerting the fans that things arn’t as they should be – or is this a call to other clubs ?

Surely a quiet word with Morgan / Moxey / Mick would have cleared things up – and then the club could have issued a “Kightly is staying” type story…

When this type of thing goes public, there is rarely a happy ending for the fans….

Happy is absolutely right! Kites would not have said what he said publicly if it wasn’t to alert other clubs to come in for him!

The diificult issue is whether this is about a desire to earn more and play in the Premiership or a lack of confidence in the set-up at Wolves….or maybe a bit of both!

As for the “If he doesn’t want to play, get rid” brigade, life definitely isn’t that simple!

As I said yesterday, you don’t manage by formula and “get rid” of any player who says he’s not happy. That way, all the quality goes and you keep the ones who all want to stay…who are probably not wanted anywhere else!

It’s a balance. With some, you have no choice and Kites may be in that category. With others, a bit of smart negotiation can keep them and there are many players who’ve been unhappy, been persuaded to stay and who flourish!

Mick’s comments just recite the formula and make us all worried whether he is savvy enough to persuade the cream to stay.

If there’s anyone on the planet that would publically turn on a player for being greedy its Mick McCarthy. But he is not doing that…in fact he’s going out of his way to say he wants to make Kites happy.

Mick is unfortunately a ‘straight talker’ without the slightest tact or diplomacy…so we all know if Kites IS being greedy or disloyal, Mick would be ranting about it like he has done about Freddy… & then they’d both be in the reserves before you know it.

So i’m guessing Mick & Moxey agree with Kites & that Kite’s issues are actually reasonable & need quickly resolving…which I think they will be.

Unlike all those here accussing him of being greedy, I haven’t actually read Kightly’s contract or been able to compare it to any other players’ contracts..so i’m not going to jump to any conclusions I might regret.

If a bigger club who can afford to double players salaries over what we can afford comes in for them, i bet most players would jump ship. The only exception would be somebody like Matt Murray and the only reason we’ve hung on to him is because of his injury record. If Kightly wants more money and it could upset the dressing room if we give him what he wants, let him go. No player is bigger than any club, not even Ronaldo! Maybe the ‘issues’ he wants to talk about are whether there is going to be so much negativity from the boo boy d***heads next season. Well done all you boo boys, you have driven our best player to the brink of leaving. Hope you are proud of yourselves.

Oh, Terry whatever my name is today baggie. I hope your neighbours are watching. As you are a self confessed dole bludger who brags about going out on the beer for a promotion party wearing the latest club merchandise, which it is obvious you would not be able to afford on the rock and roll, your dole bludging days are numbered.

Once again we have a happy-clapper telling life-long Wolves fans what they can and can’t do on this board, which doesn’t belong to them anyway! Moron!

I, and the majority of fans I know, disagree totally with what is happening at Wolves, and all believe that it will end in tears again, and we will have wasted yet another season.

In the meantime, Leicester City are signing Paul Ince as their manager! He was ours, he is a world-class winner and he could have been managing us! What second-rate losers this club has become! It will all end in tears next season, because serial losers don’t become winners, regardless of how many happy-clappers cheer them on.

Like Accountant Wolf keeps telling us, all we are fit to be is a nursery club for the big clubs, Wolves only qualify for that description when journalists are trying to inflate our ego’s.

Lots of huff and puff again gererated by the E&S the fact that we have that little bit “There are thing at the molinuex he is not happy about” gives the story a little and only a little credibility–If Kites does not want to be hear then let him go-I agree use the money for him wisely–It look like the chair he sits him down on will beed a lot of super-glue to make him stay–Glad you are getting involved MM but don’t waste valuable time ,If he does no want to be here–Sell him..

You have to worry about this. Agents now rule the game and have clearly got in his ear and explained what he could achieve elsewhere. His injury last season probably emphasises the need to make hay whilst the sun is shining. My issue is that the culture set up a few years ago to get in young an dhunry players and not pay them over the odds might be destroyed by paying someone like Kightly what he wants. This would upset the balance. Wolves should have expected this. One of those players who achieved and stood out was always going to think the grass is greener. What Wolves should have done was put in place a wage structure to get players to achieve so that they can work up to that premiership wage whilst at Wolves if they met certain targets. Rather than pay a player a set amount for the years of their contract, there should be a salary range which goes up or down if they perform or do not perform. Players wanting the money would then break their backs to achieve and then maintain to get to that top salary. Those that did not perform would not receive the high salary. I don’t think anyone would begrudge paying high salaries for superb performances. The issue with this however is setting those clearly defined goals and targets.

Stourbridge Wolf–I agree to a large extent–But what happened to our youngster last season-How many actualy made 1st team appearences–He has gone back on the younger player who plays for his shirt & may not have the experience yes–but how are they going to learn if he does not include them in the squad-He MM must realise that the players he has brought in are not good enough–I single out Elliot –MM rates him now please tell me when and were Elliot made it happen for us—But lets hope that the coming month will bring us some new blood to give us some hope of making it—No footy on the box can we have some useful discussion on this Blogg please— Crazy Dave–

Not only is it agents that are having a word with Kites, this situation happens when a lot when players are mixing with prem players on international duty. Truth is he aint good enough yet to hold down a regular first team place at any prem club other than the promoted teams. He is not a Bentley replacement (who you may remember wanted to sign for us, but we had Anderton). Difficult to tell how good he could be, two more years with us playing regularly and he could really develop. On the other hand 3 seasons as a squad player on prem wages sets him up for life and means that he doesn’t have to do a Mark Clyde and go back to landscape gardening. Tough decision, but I wish I had to make it.

Rumoured to be wanted and in demand ?
More spin and he is not for sale ?
Cannot believe a word of this article, its fabricated to try to get more interest in an average player playing for an average club in an average league. What does Mick McCarthy think he is talking about that Kightly should stay with Wolves to get Premiership football. Best bet is to move on if possible to a club like Birmingham, or QPR where money is available to get promoted ? Wolves did spend, but bought average players and are now suffering for it. I can’t blame executives wanting to off load players before allowing Mick to splash more cash, but it’s allowing him to continue baffles me ? Every player is up for sale at the right price and I think managers/executives say they are not just to get some interest. That is the same with agents spouting about how many clubs are ringing, when alot of the times there are few. It is just hype and spin.

Comment 83 Bang on the money!!!

Moxey could NOT handle Ince or ANY manager that knows his stuff – as he would be constantly blabbing on about wage scales and budgets!

Yes, Spending for spendings sake is NOT good BUT likewise having NO ambition is also just as bad!!!

If you were a young up and coming player would you sign for Mediocre Mick and Middle of the Road Moxey??? As the saying goes “Misery (Mick) needs company (Moxey) The NOT so dynamic duo!!!

EG: A quality actor gets paid better money to be a box office attraction for any film – the up and coming actors/ actresses dont get paid as much – There is a dividing line between better quality and lesser quantity!

Therefore, signing a better quality older experienced player on better wages should be a “calculated” risk – No transfer fee but better wages for say 1 season – WHY NOT?

The risk is that if he fails in that 1 season we lose out? BUT if he gells the youngsters along side maybe 3 other similar players and we gain automatic promotion – great!

Trouble is, Moxey will always use the excuse of budgets etc EVEN when it makes sense to have a few of the needed “older heads” in the team than say spend up to £4m on the likes of LAFF – a – MINUTE from Burnley!

The real reason in our view is the serious lack of man management from Moxey and MM –
As they could NOT handle the youngsters like Keogh etc blabbing on about “how good they are gonna be next season” 20 goals etc etc, and how upset they would be if someone with more talent was earning more than they are!

This Club has a very good history with proud fans who actually give a monkeys IF we could not care less, no-one would know what we think
Its just a shame the club wont meet our ambitions – not even half way!!!

Mick has his 3rd season; Lets all pray that he learns about tactics and team work FAST!

people need to be realistic, loyalty in football is a thing of the past.most players now worship the god money. most contracts seem to be written on toilet paper so they are easy to flush away. if kightly’s advisors want him to move it will probably happen. i hope it doesn’t because to me he’s not proved his credentials at chapionship level never mind higher. it’s scarey to think he’s achieved an u2i place with such a small c.v.

Stop trying to make 2 seasons ago out as a success. It was a FAILURE! We failed to get promoted AGAIN!

When you happy-clappers get it into your heads that the Championship is FAILURE, then we may get some ambition back in this under-performing club.
