Rovers keeper Friedel Villa target

friedel.jpegBlackburn’s Brad Friedel has emerged as the latest goalkeeper to be linked with Villa.

Boss Martin O’Neill is on the hunt for two new keepers, following Thomas Sorensen’s release and Scott Carson’s return to Liverpool, leaving Stuart Taylor as his only senior stopper.

Manager Mark Hughes’ decision to leave Blackburn for Manchester City could lead to an Ewood Park exodus, with David Bentley and Roque Santa Cruz among the other possible movers, and Friedel would represent just as big a casualty.

The American, one of Rovers’ most consistent performers since his arrival in 2000, is currently on a one-year rolling deal and it is believed he would be available for £3m.

That would make him a far cheaper option than some of O’Neill’s other goalkeeping targets like Carson and Joe Hart. However at 37-years-old, he would only represent a short-term option.

Friedel’s compatriot and namesake Brad Guzan remains a target and the £2m-rated Chivas keeper is keen on a move to the second city.

But he has already had a work permit application turned down in January and O’Neill will have to fight through red tape if he is to get his man.
