Toshack: Stay in team Wayne

Wednesday 4th June 2008, 11:30AM BST.

wd1636663heads-30-gd-31.jpgWolves’ hopes of fending off mounting interest in keeper Wayne Hennessey have received a helping hand today from his international manager John Toshack.

The Wales boss cautioned the 21-year-old goalkeeping sensation against a move which would deny him regular first team football.

The Hennessey camp is fully aware that none of the clubs on his trail, led by Villa and Everton but now including North London heavyweights Arsenal and Spurs according to some, can guarantee him the No 1 spot.

Toshack, delighted with the progress he has seen from the Wolves star in his first year of international football, has now publicly endorsed that view.

He said: “Where he is next season, I don’t know, it is not for us to say. It has been an interesting 12 months, we have played 13 matches in that time and only lost three. That includes matches against Holland and Germany.

“We have had some terrific goalkeeping in that run, and again Hennessey was outstanding against Holland. We have had a lot of youngsters who have moved up divisions in their careers recently and as long as they are playing, it is all right by us.

“But some end up sitting on the bench. That is not much good for us then.”

Toshack earned Molineux manager Mick McCarthy’s displeasure earlier this season, when he took a swipe at the decision to limit striker Freddy Eastwood’s first team appearances.

But these comments will be much more warmly welcomed by Wolves as they continue the fight to add to – and not subtract from – the roster of promising young players around which they hope to forge a Premiership side.

They were backed up by Hennessey’s team-mate Kevin Foley, who is hoping he returns for pre-season training to see the 6ft 4in keeper still there.

He said: “Wayne has been fantastic. I am not surprised there are a lot of clubs looking at him but it would be good to hold on to him. He wants to play at the top and we will have to see what happens.

“It would be good to stay here playing well, rather than sit on the bench somewhere else. Matt Murray is brilliant as well and hopefully he will be back fighting for a place next season.”

Lescott has been one of the few to make the move at an early age and get established. Look at Robbie Keane when he left. Jumped around from club to club and even now never really a Spurs ‘regular’.

Perhaps Stuart Pearce should say the same to Michael Kightly!!!

I here West Ham want both Kightly and SEB and are offering a huge cash amount plus players.

I said at the end of last season that we will find it difficult to hold onto Wayne, Kites and SEB as a result of McCarthy’s failure

Building a young hungry squad is for the likes of Crewe Alexander not Wolverhampton Wanderers, because if they prove themselves within 12 – 18 months which these 3 have the vultures from Prem will be in like a shot – and they are. With this policy we will always be building a young hungry squad, a Premier League Nursery club is what we will become. And Moxey is happy as long as the club are financially sound because this is his job, not football but business.

How long does Morgan need to have a look at things? What was he doing prior to buying Wolves? Surely he must have taken a look before he bought. If so then why did he sanction McCarthy’s purchase of D Ward, Elliott and all the other crap he bought (bar SEB) last close season. And then still decides to keep this failure

This may sound negative but it is fact

    4) All 3 of our goalies are better than kiely, Terry.
Hennessey is a quality goalkeeper but he will not be guaranteed a shirt when England’s number 1 is back. The reason is Murray governs his 6 yard box and beyond. His weakest point is the kicking. What a great position to be in though… the best goalkeeping talent of any club and that includes Chelsea!

If we had any sense then we would send Matt Murray out on loan until January to regain his fitness.

We could then sit down and seriously look as to the position of having two class goalkeepers at our club. This would allow Wayne Hennessy to further develop and to be effectively in the “shop-window” for the first half of the season. At this point if a major club came in offering silly money then perhaps we could consider their offer and sell Wayne. The resulting windfall could mean that further funds were available to boost our Premiership target if required. We would also then have a fit Matt Murray.

To allow Wayne to leave before Matt Murray’s fitness has been proven is just plain bonkers.

Secondly if the Gunners and co. are sniffing Moxey must be wetting himself at the bonus he’s likely to get for once again selling one of our best prospects and improving the clubs bottom line. Jez top tip, negotiate a half decent sell on clause this time, theres a good chap and perhaps we can have a bit of a spruce up in the Steve Bull stand that includes some Plasma screens (not a 17 inch portable) to watch the game whilst queing for ages for coffee thats overpriced and more often than not out of stock. Just wolves have to make sure Matt is 100% and his contract water-tight if a bid of £7/8m comes in, and we sign some cover as from what i have seen of Ikeme he has the raw talent but lacks confidence at time.
