Baggies boss in keeper search
Tuesday 3rd June 2008, 11:25AM BST.
Albion manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed a new goalkeeper is among his wish list of summer transfer targets.
Mowbray wants a third keeper to compete with veteran Dean Kiely and the untried Michal Danek for the No 1 spot in the Premier League.
While morning reports linking England man Scott Carson with a loan move to The Hawthorns are said to be wide of the mark, Mowbray seems certain to get his wish to land an extra shot stopper before the new season.
He said “It is something we have talked about and having three goalkeepers is probably the thing to do in the Premier League. Having good competition is generally good for them and it is down to them on the training ground.
“They know they have to be very focused out on the pitch because there are two other guys waiting to grab an opportunity. It is up to me to know when to give those people the opportunity.”
Kiely has enjoying a surge in profile, after a man-of-the-match performance for the Republic of Ireland last week, while Danek’s loan from Czech club Viktoria Plzen has been extended until January.
Yet Mowbray is still thought to be looking for a goalkeeper capable of being a Premier League regular rather than simply back-up to his existing duo. Youngster Luke Daniels is due back at The Hawthorns for pre-season training after spending most of last season on loan with Motherwell.
He looks set to leave for another extended spell away from the club gaining first team experience.
He said: “We will probably be letting him play some more games next season if we can find the right club for him.”
Mowbray was also behing Kiely’s decision to end his international retirement and return to action for the Republic of Ireland. Kiely won his ninth and 10th caps last week after being lured back by new coach Giovanni Trapattoni and coach Liam Brady.
He said: “I had a few conversations with Dean and a few with Liam Brady and I think it’s good for Dean at this stage of his career to get back involved.”

Scott Carson lol. Ok what is going on with Gera it was said that he was going to sort it all out before the weekend. And now its going to far just leave Gera we all know you are off.

a shame the reports linking us to Carson are short of any substance, he would have been a fantastic signing
Report abuse
good artical i think it would be nice to see danek given the chance this season with kiely and another keeper waiting in the wings.
Ben foster maybe???
anyone heard anything about gera, phillips and albs yet?
i think phillips will be the only one to stay. albs wouldnt be a massive loss and TMhas always said he doesnt want players that do not want to play for us. danek shhould be assessd pre-season and well i just don’t think keily is top level keeper.

Villa are after Foster,Il type this with gritted teeth…we cant compete with them for his signature
Report abuse
Foster would be my choice above Carson, but realistically would it happen?!
I’d love it if Kuszack came back for a season but again can’t see it happening.
Thomas Sorenson? Marcus Hannemann? They’d be the cheaper options and both good keepers
Are we all still in the dark about Gera, Phillips and Albert? I keep logging on here every 30 mins to see if it says anything about it!!
Didn’t the “want away three”‘s contracts all end on 31st May?
Does this mean we’re no longer paying them?
I guess KP (to QPR) and Gera (to someone with European games next year) are off, but I can’t see Alby leaving.
Rumours down here in Cardiff are again linking us with Joe Ledley – he turned down the Dingles last year saying he’d only go to a Premiership club and that he wanted to help get Cardiff there.
His profile has obviously risen since then – although I’ve been singing his praises on other forums for 3 years now – and with his goal in the FA Cup semi I’m sure the price has too!
£3m is being branded around – still a bargain IMO.

COUPLE OF KEEPERS WHO WOULD DO A JOB AND ARE GOING FREE – THOMAS SORENSEN & RICHARD WRIGHT
Report abuse
we will need a couple of keepers in goal each match if we don’t buy any quality defenders..
If we have R.Wright i’m stayin in bed!! Did have potential but obviously not bothered..
7. Ledley would be good signing as would Barnes.. not john!!
top of the list though… hennesss…..ey…..

kevin phillips to charlton gera to everton thats what i can see shame really does any 1 have a clue about our sponser yet fair play to the vile with the kids of acorns

TM said….”It is something we have talked about and having three goalkeepers is probably the thing to do in the Premier League”.
I think the other teams in the league might complain LOL…
Report abuse
You could do with 2 keepers. 1 on the left side of the goal and the other on the right. :-)

Matt Murray was on about going out on loan and we have an abundance of keepers.Might help you sell the rest of your season tickets.

Murray is pants so no thanks..fizzy pop boys!

I for one am getting a little frustrated with the KP and ZG situation. We heard before Gera went away on international duty that he was going to make a decision, then by the end of last week, then by the begining of this week. Now I know we live in the age of the bosman ruling but I think we should set the deadline for a decision not the player, after all no-one is bigger than the club although I do want him to stay. We need to get on with our planning if he does leave how long are we supposed to wait?. As for KP again what’s going on? I think he deserves the two years to be honest after what he has done for the club in the previous two season and it’s not going to break the bank. Albey with all due respect sorry but I couldn’t give two hoots may be a little harsh but I think Clem is better than him and Barnett.
As for Joe Leadly do we really need him? or is it as a replacement for Gera? I didn’t expect things to happen quickly as this is the Albion we are talking about but without loans and paperwork being made permanent we haven’t done anything yet!!!!
I agree with earlier post about the keeper sign that Hannerman from Reading and whilst we are at it Kevin Doyle, James Harper and Ingamarson. 4 players 12 million or so and would give us a premiership spine any takers?

Sort the keeper position out and you`ll be ok. Your manager is class not like ours and plays the game the right way.

Optimistic wolf, v funny but on a more serious note you can keep your crocks mate, seems you like to collect them. Don`t rate Murray anyway, never lived up to his early potential.
Sorry to hear kites is off, now that will hit youre already very poor season ticket sales.

16.. How much money would you like to bet that we wont lose EVERY game 4-0 you complete idiot put your money where your mouth is. Not even your bunch of amatures would lose 4-0 in every game .

The trouble you will have is the same problem that any team going into the Prem has. When the pattern for many seasons has generally been that teams that go up go straight back down, players are reluctant to go to promoted teams. (Not having a dig there, just stating what happens.)
Your midfield and strikers seem okay for the Prem, but your defence will need a major overhaul. You will also ned a few squad players, who will be decent players, but will be willing to play second fiddle to the starters. (Young and hungry anyone?)
Best of luck to you anyway. (Even though it be a little grudgingly.)

Reports say Frazer Campbell quoted to Hull at £5M – JP get the wallet out ……. please – quick. deebee
Report abuse
I see according to this paper that Middlesbrough are about to make a formal offer for Gera…
Now I may be a tad biased – but how is that taking a step up ? If you had to name the clubs that will fight it out for survival next season they would be right in the middle of it… same with Wigan.
I can’t see why he would trade the goodwill he has at the Albion for Middlesbrough – unless it was for a huge wage increase.
I can understand if he goes to a club playing in Europe next season – but to move sideways seems pointless.
Sorry Mr Mowbury, we have the two best keepers in the Midlands and they are both staying put.
BTW – Frazier Campbell – offered to Hull for £5M …… JP/TM are you listening ….. (please).

wiseguy, Understand you being wound up by some silly comments but I just have to reply regarding Matt Murray. He is an awesome keeper, only Schmeichel senior could be considered superior. Genuine good luck for the next season and I do hope you can make some strengthening buys.
26 – Matt Murray is a class keeper (yes, it does hurt to write it), but saying Schmeichel only could be considered better is ridiculous!!
I’m sticking with Hannemann and Sorenson, both been there, seen it and done it before. The new keeper needs to be English speaking, that’s why he said he didn’t throw Danek in last season, so no European bargain hunting for this one Mogga.
Sunderland had to spend £9million quid on a keeper, but he helped keep them up so was he worth it????

Murray is ten times better than any keeper youve got.

I don’t think we need to worry too much about the lack of activity on either new signings or the Hawthorns three. Players are with international teams or on holiday. None of the other clubs are doing much actual business at the moment, most of what’s being reported on is for the sake of newspaper sales and to feed our thirst for football in the close season.
Matt Murray has always struck me as a top keeper but (A) He isn’t match fit and is unlikely to be for quite a few months and (B) At his age with the serious injuries he’s suffered he may not get back to his best. It gives me no pleasure saying this and I wish him the best, he seems like a decent bloke.

Just seen the Gera story and I must admit that once again it has hit me like a bolt from the blue.
Message for E&S.
UNTIL SOMETHING DEFINITE HAPPENS, WE DON’T WANT TO KNOW. THIS IS A NON STORY. GERA IS A QUALITY INTERNATIONAL PLAYER SO OTHER TEAMS ARE BOUND TO BE INTERESTED. TELL US WHEN HE’S SIGNED ON THE DOTTED LINE FOR US OR FOR SOMEONE ELSE. UNTIL THEN LEAVE IT ALONE. IT’S BECOME BORING. VERY, VERY BORING. THANK YOU.

32. don’t read it then.

Michael.
Thank you for your concern. I’m not talking about transfers in general. If for instance, someone comes in for Ishmael Miller, that’s news. Gera has been linked with every club south of Greenland and surely even you must be finding it a bit tedious by now.

33 – jest imagine if you were waiting for news of your premiership signings – you would want to keep checking on here too.
Obviously that will need a HUGE imagination – I jest hope you can do it.
