Wolves bid for Hearts’ Berra

Wolves have had a £1.5m bid for Scotland international defender Christophe Berra turned down by Hearts.
The 23-year-old’s agent has confirmed that Wolves had tabled a firm offer for the Hearts defender but the Tynecastle club are holding out for a £2m deal.
But Berra, who made his full debut for Scotland against the Czech Republic on Friday, is said to be keen on a move to Molineux, increasing the likelihood that Wolves will return with an improved offer for the 6ft 1in centre-back.
The player’s agent Gary Mackay is now demanding immediate talks with Hearts officials, as he looks to smooth his client’s passage south of the border.
He said: “Christophe, like every other player, wants to further his career. Wolves are a very big club who missed out on the English Championship play-offs narrowly. Their interest in Christophe shows their intention to mount a serious challenge for promotion next season.
“The level Hearts attained last season compared to Wolves’ level is pretty relative. Christophe has progressed this year in difficult circumstances. He has just made his international debut, so people like George Burley and Mick McCarthy are aware of his development.
“I will speak to Hearts over the next 24 to 48 hours about the situation.”

3) Don’t listen to them mate. At this current time they have a slightly better team and are in a higher division but bigger club….??? Never, ever unless we dropped out of the leagues. People across the world know of us and we have big fan bases in Scandinavia, Malta etc. They cannot compare!

Like us, Leeds utd will always be a big club. Huddersfield were once a great team but never a big club.

Hope you get him – he is a good, quick defender who will do well for you. If only we were looking for defensive reinforcements as well – getting a bit worries about the likes of Drogba, Ronaldo, Torres etc facing Clem and Barnett!

Wolves fans must be really excited about next season, Morgan is stumping up the cash and Mick is making what looks to be good signings. As long as Mick can manage appropriately next season the squad is already shaping up to look pretty strong.
Moxey has already stated that none of the star players will be lost to other clubs, and with additions like the ones reported i can see Wolves making the top two.
Filton wolf, i agree, Peter Whittingham is an excellent player and would be ideal as a creative midfielder along side Kites and Jarvis.

I’ve heard he is not too good at all and overrated and certainly not worth 1.5 million.
Even if he is a decent centreback (which is not what i’ve heard) he is not pacey and we need some speed in the centre of our defense. Hearts fans arent too sad to see he may be leaving and i’m fed up of settling for average players
Same with Lafferty. 3 or 4 million for him is simply a joke, Lafferty has scored 10 goals throughout his career – only 5 last season and he actually through the 46 games only got 1 assist, these just arent the kind of players we need,

Thanks Bomber !! Nice to be in touch again. I also think that at a push Whittingham could even cover the likes of Kites and Jarvis in times of injury – as could Lafferty if we were fortunate enough to get him as well.
I certainly agree that the players we’re being linked to are just the type we need. We just do not want any ‘managerial fallings out’ if you get my drift !!

Fair enough Deanowolf, but who would you have in mind as alternative targets for the club? There have been so many names and rumours flying around (as is the norm at this time of year) it’s hard to keep track of who we are being linked with… and 90% of those rumours will probably never even come off. I’m just happy that we are being linked with a decent calibre of player (and that the Steve Howard rumours seem to have gone away!).

18. agree with you on the signings front (grrrrr baggie supporter lol) but its the same old thing with wolves can the manager get them playing PROPERLY??? the wolves job is a bit like the england job!!!on paper have a good team, but on the pitch they are naff, the managers continue to pick favourites even though there are better alternatives about and the end result is always the same, disappointed and underachieved at the end of the campaign!!!

well said deanowolf – wolves fans jump on bandwagons for players they want rid off and the same for anyone linked with us – 2m for a centrehalf playing in Scotland has got to be way overpriced and the same with lafferty – we dont need any more wingers and he certainly doesnt have the record to warrant 4m as a centreforward – compare both these signings to seb who was 1.5m!

Seems ok but i would like to see some established signings. SEB was an established championship player. We need some experience to go with the youth. Look at the teams that went up last year they all had some quality experienced pro’s at our level or droping down from the Premier. I fear that we will not achieve without a balance.

As ever we have to wait for the Prem clubs to complete their shuffle’s. When they are done with the moves I am sure we will find one or two defenders hanging around desperate to be taken on by an ambitious club like ours. Or not! Get your finger out in the office sign the boy up God knows we will need him if we are to win this league. Surely that’s the point.

Its a good player to buy but will only prove to be a good signing if theres someone next to him the same level. Take Vidic at Man Utd with Rio they were solid as rock when playing together but when one was missing they were pretty weak. It was the same with lescott made the defence strong but never solid as there was always crap next to him. So hope we bring this guy in and then someone else good to go next to him, as if we put collins with this guy he will not stand a chance at showing us how good he is.

Not too sure about Berra! The Scottish Premier is not even as competitive as Championship outside of the old firm! We’ve had a few from north of Hadrian’s wall that have simply not been up to much! I hope this is not the case here.

You gotta remember, we are starting from a lowpoint regarding defenders, MM is trying to sign players to get us out of this division and regarding these players, we have to walk before we try to run,Get it? We have to cut our cloth accordingly, it’s alright going on about this player or that like we have a dvine right to be able to sign them…But THEY have got to want to come to Wolves. Good enough to captain a side in his early twenties. Two full seasons of first team regular appearances. Two more seasons of filling in to gain experience. Good reports about him all over the press.
He seems to fit the “young, hungry and seasoned” bill Mick is looking for so why are we messing about? If we don’t get the deal done someone else will.

I hope MM judgement stands up, the 2 players we are eyeing Berra,raferty will not come cheap and I hope they are good enough not just for this division but the prem too should we get there.
MM have proved shrewd in the bargain basement catergory with Kightly,Elokobi, etc but poor when good money has been spent.i.e Darren ward,Elliot,Eastwood (good enough in my view, just the wrong player for a MM team). only SEB has proved himself

You have to remember that all McCarthy’s footballing connections are in the lower regions of the league, and into the non-league clubs.
You would not go to McCarthy with a question about any European player, in that arena he would undoubtedly spout the rubbish he does in TV pundit mode, and in E&S articles, but he knows nothing.
McCarthy has been kept on at Wolves, in spite of his obvious 2007-2008 failures, but because of his ability to keep producing exciting new UK footballers from the lower divisions, all of them *CHEAP*.
Now you know where the ambitions of this club are extending!
