Anger at £7 fee to visit The Public

Monday 2nd June 2008, 4:24PM BST.

publicpub.jpgVisitors to controversial West Bromwich arts centre The Public will pay an entrance fee of almost £7, it was announced today.

Tickets for the venue will be priced at £6.95 for adults with youngsters under 16 paying £4.95.

The pink and black building is finally due to open its doors on June 28.

The Public Gallery Limited said that the charges were competitive and offer value for money compared to other venues in the area, despite galleries in nearby Wednesbury, Walsall and Wolverhampton all offering free entry.

But the borough’s Conservative group leader Tony Ward, a long term opponent of the project, said: “I think this is absolutely disgraceful. Especially when you look at the other areas where people can go to museums and art galleries for free.”

Visitors will also pay extra if they want to create their own artwork inside the gallery.

A family of four, of two adults and two children, will pay nearly £24. Concessions, including unemployed people, pensioners, students and disabled carers, will all pay £4.95.

A season ticket will cost £60 offering unlimited access for a year, with membership schemes on offer for £30 for non-Sandwell residents and £10 for people from the borough.

I previously gave this abortion 2 years before it closed down, now after this disclosure, I give it less than 12 months.

What a waste of 80 million pound, but don’t worry people, keep paying the 130 pence a litre, for fuel to pay for this white elephant, who knows, Our councillors might even forego their inflated expenses to help pay something back, for their wasting OUR money.

What a load of rubbish! Who in their right mind is going to pay £7 to visit an art gallery that doesn’t even have any work by famous artists! I have visited art galleries all over the world; the majority of them, including those in London, are free. The Public is doomed to fail, at huge expense to the taxpayer.

Ah, it’s now “The Public Gallery Limited” – offering competative charges.
Why do I get the feeling we are being ripped-off yet again ?

Well done Sandwell, it makes me proud to say I’m from West Bromwich. NOT

£7?! We’ve already paid for it, and now we are being fleeced again..so much for giving poorer people access to arts and culture, eh? I will not pay a single penny towards this absurd scheme – I’d rather spend it abroad or give to charity. Once again the Black Country does it’s best to do it the worst.

This is democracy in action guys, The Unelected, out of touch Sandwell Council, that got in by Default, not by being voted in, decided they wanted a monument to their rule over Sandwell Residents, and this was the result, shame they couldn’t raise the Titanic, it would have been more appropriate, but notice guys the only people that have benefited from this abortion are your councillors, everyone else has had to foot the bill for this disaster.

I just hope they have the guts to stand down after this fiasco.

West Bromwich has no university..the same for a lot of towns in Sandwell. No, instead, you have a £52million white (or pink), elephant that demands being fed £7 every single time you have the absurdity of wishing to experience some arts and culture. I know where my money SHOULD have gone..

Well, maybe their first exhibition will be a photo record of the start stop start stop progress of the building’s unique history – this section of the gallery should be free.

Considering that many wards in Sandwell are experiencing high levels of unemployment and lack of skills which could lead to employment, amongst their occupants. I would have preferred the money wasted on West Bromwich’s answer to the ‘Millennium Dome’, to have been spent more wisely.
It is all very well for some to argue that the money for this dreadful ‘white elephant’, has been raised externally.
However I feel any such funding should have been allocated to far more worthy projects including the provision of better training facilities for the long term unemployed, business renewal, better health care for those who need it in Sandwell, and greater susbidy for those who need more care than others in the community in which they live.
Whether we look at the short, middle or long term prospect of any such enterprise as ‘the Public’ within an area such as Sandwell, despite ‘bullish comments’ from unelected councillors, surely the outlook is bleak?

I am an artist and live in Rowley Regis so was lokking forward to an Arts Center in the local area, however the last thing i expected was to pay an entry fee.Is this to special exhibitions or a general fee?I can go to Tate Modern, the V and A, the Natural History Museum,Walsall Art Gallery,Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery etc etc with my family for free.I am very disappointed.

We visited today, the opening weekend, in search of family fun. Some good points: My daughter enjoyed an interactive storytelling experience and being serenaded by a lovesick submariner inside a tow-along metal whale. However, the “couture” cafe seemed ill-prepared for customers: no trays, no price list for non-alcoholic drinks or other sundries, once the black and white striped cups (matching the theme of the cafe interior) had run out, drinks were served in less appealing paper cups. Only able to access stairs under staff supervision (for some reason 2 out of 4 lifts were out of service). A large area of the cafe was fenced off with bottles of cava, jugs of orange juice and profiteroles: not clear for whom, but obviously not for the “public”. It will be interesting to see how many adults will choose to pay 6.95GBP to enter the galleries. This is not worthy of comparison to the Pompidou Centre – for which I would consider that fee good value!
