ambulance6.jpgPolice today named the 31-year-old Stafford cyclist who died after being thrown off his bike in a collision with a car.

Daniel Scott-Mullen, of Broc Hill Way, Milford, was thrown over a barrier on Queensville Bridge after the accident on Tuesday night.

A post mortem found Mr Scott-Mullen died of multiple injuries after he fell around 30ft down an embankment at the side of the railway bridge. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.

Yesterday, the Express & Star reported how pub landlord Pete Turner called for more speed enforcement on the “frightening” stretch of Lichfield Road where the tragedy took place.

Mr Turner was one of the first people on the scene of the collision – and told of how he struggled to avoid a further crash as cars came speeding up the bridge.

Mr Turner, the 55-year-old landlord of the nearby Spittalbrook Inn, said: “I was out in the beer garden directly below the bridge and I’d just walked in when someone heard the bang and shouted to ring for an ambulance.

“When I got up there, there were a couple of cars which had been involved and the occupants were in shock. We could see someone had gone over the other side of the barrier because some belongings were strewn about – I think there was a rucksack of some sort – but I couldn’t see him or any bike because it was too dark and we didn’t have any torches. The police, firefighters and the ambulance were there within minutes.”

Mr Turner said speed enforcement was needed on the bridge as cars were approaching the scene at “frightening” speeds.

He said: “I don’t like to say it but if there ever was a need for a speed camera, it’s there. The only time the traffic’s ever moving at 30mph is when the kids are on the school run.”

The driver of the car involved, an 18-year-old from the Penkridge area, has been released on police bail.

Staffordshire Police have issued renewed appeals for anyone who saw the incident, or anyone who saw the Fiesta or the cyclist prior to the collision, to contact Sgt Ben Foster of Stone Neighbourhood Policing Unit on 08453 302010.

Police also want to speak to any cyclists who were in the general area around the time of the tragedy.
