Baggies won’t be held to ransom

Thursday 29th May 2008, 12:20PM BST.

72395albion-12-dh-5.jpgAlbion boss Tony Mowbray has warned he will not break the bank to keep Zoltan Gera and Kevin Phillips at The Hawthorns.

Mowbray revealed he is unwilling to break the Hawthorns pay structure – even if it means losing his out-of-contract stars for their return to the Premier League.

The Baggies are awaiting answers from Gera, Phillips and defender Martin Albrechtsen on new contracts to stay at The Hawthorns, but Mowbray says the club will not be dragged into an auction for their services.

He said: “We are not in the business of players going out and checking the rest of the world, then coming back with their best offer asking us to try to beat it. We don’t operate like that.

“It should never be about money for me. They know where we are as a club and they will be offered the best contracts this club can offer. If they want to ply their trade elsewhere for more money, then good luck to them.

“The squad is what everybody has got to respect. I respect the squad and we will not be ‘busting the bank’ for any single player. Their agents know that and if they want to hawk them around and get a better price and salary package, we won’t be budging.

“We won’t be breaking structures and it is that simple, because I want to be fair to the squad and the other players. If they get better packages that are out of our ball park, then good luck to them.”

Mowbray is now keen for speedy decisions from the trio as he looks to build his squad for the return to the top flight. Both Gera and Albrechtsen’s agents have hinted their clients are close to making up their minds.

Gera on the other hand will be key to us staying up and virtually irreplaceable.

I have more respect for TM day after day. He says it as it is. In this modern football era of absolutely stupid pay structures it is very refreshing that we are not bowing down to agent pressure.

West brom have never paid really big wages (in football terms) and obviously we lose out on players because of it, but I would sooner lose out on a player that is only interested in big money and get a player that wants to play for the club

Does anyone think that Jason Roberts coming back would be a good move, it looks like Blackburn are ready to sell and although he under achieved when he was with us before i do believe that he would be a major assett now and that the football we play would definately suit him.

Phillips will get goals in the prem as he is a clever player, what is 20k a week if his goals secure prem football and for every place you finish higher in the table you get 500k or 750k. Not sure on that one.

I do agree with Tony Mowbray aswel though and he must have something else lined up. you need to compare both players to wots around you in your mini league.

    Wigan- heskey, bent, sibieski
    bolton- davis
    stoke- fuller, creswell, sidebe
hull – windass, the guy from man utd
    fullham – healey,
west brom – phiilips, bednar, miller, moore

obviously im missing players as this is off the top of my head but you do look stronger than the other sides and keeping phillips i think would be a massive boost, look at mcbride when he was fit, he was a key to fulham and he has only left to return home and he is pusghing 36.

As for the Gera comment – Robinson did have more assists and i’m not doubting his quality; however, Gera’s teamwork, ability on the ball, heading and overall game is priceless and i don’t think that we could attract a replacement with the same attributes. Just my opinion.

Gera and KP owe us nothing. They could have left last season but stayed and helped us back to the Prem. They would be an asset to any team outside the top 5 or 6 in the Prem but one of the reasons we failed last season was because of players whose heads were turned the wrong way by agents and other clubs courting them. ToMo is right in what he says. We will need 11 men on the field prepared to run through brick walls for the cause next term whatever they are paid and if they aren’t interested then wish them well and let them go.

From where i’m sitting it looks to me as thou our faithful KP has rightfully set his sights on a contract that he can happily end his career with – and i dont think it’s ours.

Gera on the other hand is a player that i believe to be central to our success next season, i really hope he chooses to remain at the club as he is an amazing individual and team character.

Finally alby, wouldnt be too bothered if he packed his bags and left tbh – our defence needs alot of work and i dont think alby will be in the running next season anyways.

I agree with most of the posts on here however, even some of the posts from the more constructive Wolves fans. To those fans all I would say is keep the faith get yourselves up, and hopefully if we stay up we’ll get the black country derby on in the prem. We know it’s only good natured banter from the majority.

On agents, I agree that they are a major problem. I guess we’ll never know if Gera genuinely wanted to stay, though I think that’s irrelevent anyway. His agent seems to want him to move so he can have his cut.

I am right behind TM, if he wants to leave that desperatly, then it would be pointless trying to keep him, we need to move on and build for next year with players who actually want to play for us.

With KP, I also agree with some of the comments on here, at his age he will not play the majority of games. He’s been a great player for us and we have benefited from having him at the club. However, time to move on.

    The Real Bully.

    71 Laughing Wolf.
Real Sitting Bully try to answer question with question. ‘When we’re in the prem filling 40K seats will not be an issue.’ My question. When? Or in traditional red indian. How?
PS. Ground reduction going well. we will have people on the outside wishing they could get in. You will have 22K on the inside wishing they could get out. Never mind, think of the effect of 40K booing. Unbelievable.

71 Morgan Wolves through and through. You all know he’s chosen you behind his real love Liverpool. Even the smallest club in the Prem (which we are not – Hull / Stoke / Pompey / Wigan /Fulham on av attendance last year all below us) has still got to be in the Prem.
Wish you were here and don’t you know it.

    My humble opinion is..

Sign kev n gera they are the premier bar we need too set now promoted,30grand plus wages!
But its at the defence we need utmost attention.Man u won league due too the best defence…
We have our left and right back sorted both good enough for the prem…centers are main issue with a goalie and holding midfield next..
