Lafferty issues plea to Wolves

Wednesday 28th May 2008, 12:00PM BST.

Kyle laffertyWolves target Kyle Lafferty today issued a “come and get me” plea after declaring that he wants to leave Burnley.

Boss Mick McCarthy has tabled a £2.25m bid plus Stephen Elliott for the Northern Ireland international, but it is believed the Turf Moor club still want £4m.

But it seems the 20-year-old striker is desperate to move. He today claimed he does not feel wanted by the club.

He said: “I have enjoyed my time at Burnley, learned so much at the club but I now feel it’s time for me to move on. I need a fresh challenge at my stage of my career.

“I’ve given my all to Burnley but no player is going to stay where he’s not wanted. It’s imperative I make a move now as it would help my international career.”

Lafferty is believed to favour a move to Wolves but his desire to leave Lancashire could trigger the start of a bidding war for his services.

A move to Wolves is by no means cut and dried, however, as Lafferty is a boyhood Rangers fan and both Glasgow clubs remain interested. Elliott’s position is also unclear too.

The former Sunderland striker may well be open to a move after being made available to offers by McCarthy at the end of the season after struggling for his best form.

But for Burnley to be tempted by Wolves’ bid for Lafferty, the Turf Moor club would need to accept Elliott as part of the deal as things stand.

Clarets boss Owen Coyle insisted Lafferty wouldn’t be sold unless it was for silly money but the player’s outburst may hasten his departure.

“If someone was to come in and offer something out of this world, that would be for Kyle, the chairman and Brendan Flood to have a look at,” said Coyle.

But the Scot admitted he could face the prospect of losing his prize asset.

“There is a fear you could lose anybody from your squad,” he said. “That’s just the nature of football. I can’t stop people making offers.”

Meanwhile, Wolves transfer-listed striker Freddy Eastwood is rumoured to be attracting the interest of beaten play-off finalists Bristol City.

Lafferty looks like he wants to come but the maximum we should bid is £3 million plus Elliot. Believe it or not with Akinibiyi there, it might suit Elliot. Anyway if Rangers come in, let’s go for Kris Boyd. They have loads of forwards there!

Come on Wolves he wants to come get it done. I think it’s cus he may know alot of the Irish lads here too which I think will be good for team morale. And don’t listen to any idiots saying another irishman, cus Lafferty is a class player who is wanted by better teams than Wolves.(That hurt) So if he wants to come just pay the money and then turn our attention to defence.

We still need another striker. Lafferty is way ahead of Howard or others mentioned. He is way ahead of the ones on the way out too. An ideal candidate for us if we have real intentions of challenging for promotion.

The question is, if he was really that good and could hack it in the Premiership, then why did Villa let him go?

Sure, he was part of the deal for Davies, but you don’t sell your best players as part of a deal! Just look at us with Stephen Elliot!

    81 – I am celebrating – why wouldn’t I ?

Anyway – so he got sent off – big deal.

I think we both know that Luke Moore is worth a gamble – its only 3 mill – but i suppose Kyle laffatme offers real value for money…?

I don’t think given our strike options we are relying on moore to keep us up on his own – he will add to, and compliment what we already have.

Wolves on the other hand have SEB – after him its hard to see where the goals are coming from – and you’re gonna need a lot of goals to get up next season.

82 – he is behind Young, Carew, Harwood – who all cost many millions –

Its a stupid argument, like asking why are Burnley selling Lafferty if he’s any good… you can say that about any player.

p.s – he aint part of the davies deal as far as i know… they are still paying the full price for him.

Luke Moore or Lafferty. It is not a contest. Did anyone see the goal he scored at Windsor Park a few months ago. Burnley play him out wide as they have other centre forwards, rather like we did with most of ours last season – Keogh, Ward and Elliot.
He will be a quality signing at the right price. Luke Moore isn’t. I would not be happy if we had signed him after the feedback I have had from Villa fans!

    Freddie's Right Foot

I think this whole Lafferty debate is getting a bit long in the tooth now, I can’t honestly see Wolves pushing the bid to close on £4m and besides, why would burnley want Stephen Elliott anyway ?
He probably earns a half decent wage at Molineux and is also probably quite content to stay where he is until the remainder of his contract is up and thats close on 2 years away yet. If he does stay then I reckon MM will use him as a squad player and he’ll fill in (badly) for missing wingers and the like ! Or he’ll go on record as saying ‘I can play right wing boss’ and he’ll get the first half of next season on the right wing just like Wardy did last season out on the left! Nobody in their right mind is going to pay anywhere near the £1.5m that we did for Elliott especially while Eastwood is up for the same money. He’s just too unreliable in terms of his fitness and thats going to be the deal breaker everytime. I think (personally) that we should let him go cheap and cut our losses or send him out on loan to somewhere like Leeds (where he cant hurt us) for the season. Maybe if he can get a full season without injuries under his belt and score 10 – 15 goals then we might just get some interest in him.
That would be better than fielding him as a ‘right winger’ when Kightly is out but if our little wizard is fit then Elliott’s gonna end up warming the spot left vacant by Freddie Eastwood. We need another proper goalscorer like Ebanks-Blake for sure but I can see us going with 6 or 7 strikers again next season, I’d go for another Center half to play alongside Craddock, I’d replace Olofinjana and Henry in midfield and I’d also look at another keeper (as backup if Murray doesn’t get fit) to keep Hennesey on his toes. All we can do is watch this space and see what unfolds… I for one have already renewed my season ticket in the south bank so whatever happens I’ll continue to give 110% support to whoever pulls on the shirt. Come on you Wolves

As for K. Lafferty I dunno tbh could be major sucess or major disater considering the hefty fee for him. Least Elliot will be on his though lol.

102 – the quote from post 82 was “Sure, he was part of the deal for Davies” – and all I said was that i don’t think he was part of the deal. Davies was sold whether we got Luke Moore in or not.

Obviously if you subtract one deal from the other you get a total – but that doesn’t mean they are linked. However – who cares ?
