Man, 27, injured in knife attack

Wednesday 28th May 2008, 11:43AM BST.

A man was knifed in a street fight in Wolverhampton just yards from where a father-of-two was shot dead.

The 27-year-old victim was taken to New Cross Hospital with stab wounds in his shoulder. Part of the road was closed for two hours while police investigated.

Trouble broke out in Newhampton Road West in Whitmore Reans outside Veno’s Hairdressing salon, almost opposite the Bagot Arms where 26-year-old Luke Harris was gunned down two months ago.

Residents are now calling for police cameras to be installed in the area.

Police were called to the scene at around 5.40pm yesterday. They say a man was found to have minor stab wounds and taken to hospital where he was discharged after treatment. Officers told traders to close their businesses while they conducted inquiries.

Two local men, aged 19 and 21, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and are in police custody.

Ali Khadire, aged 30, who runs the nearby pizza takeaway, pulled down the shutters of his restaurant when he heard the sounds of a fight from his kitchen.

He said: “There are too many things like this happening around here. Even I am frightened to be in the shop on my own at night.”
