Pupils at more than 100 Staffordshire schools have pledged to take a healthier journey to school this week. Walk to School Week will see thousands do their bit to cut their carbon footprint by walking or cycling to school.

Staffordshire already boasts the most successful “walking bus” programme in the country – where several pupils meet at a central point and walk to school with a volunteer parent. Last year, the county had a fifth of all such schemes in the UK and the number has grown since.

Staffordshire County Council’s road safety unit is spearheading the campaign which promotes the health benefits of leading an active life as well as the positive impact on the environment.

Walk to School Week has been growing from strength to strength each year, with more and more parents and children joining the movement for healthy children and a healthy environment.

However, this year will see a new twist, with pupils being given a “travel card” incentive.

Every time they walk or cycle to school they will get their pass stamped with a point which could win them prizes.

Children will also get points if their family helps reduce the number of car journeys by giving a lift to another pupil.

Special pencils will be given to those kids who have made a great effort throughout the term.

Class charts will also be posted on walls to foster a sense of healthy competition.

Deputy council leader Councillor Robert Simpson said the campaign was a “real winner”.

“Reducing the number of cars travelling to school helps the environment but also means there are fewer cars around schools, making it much safer for cyclists and pedestrians,” he said.

“This is a first class scheme which will have enormous benefits both on the health and well-being of the children taking part and on the environment.

“Staffordshire already has a great track record with the most successful walking bus programme in the UK.

“I hope that the pupils and their families really support Walk to School Week and enjoy getting out in the lovely weather.”
