A total of 130 motorists were stopped by police and handed with fines for illegally using a Walsall town centre road as a cut through.

Drivers travelling along St Paul’s Street were hit with £30 on the spot penalties as part of an ongoing police crackdown yesterday.

The road along with Bridge Street is restricted to taxis, buses, delivery vans and disabled users but is regularly used by other visitors.

Seven officers from the Walsall town centre neighbourhood team spent four hours stopping drivers entering St Paul’s Street.  

It is part of an on-going police crackdown which has seen almost 400 similar fines handed out to drivers breaking the law by using the road this year. 

Acting Sgt Alan Freeman,  said it is a restricted road which has clear signs and officers wanted to get the message across.

This latest crackdown follows recent automated number plate checks where 40 drivers being pulled over in Station Road, Rushall. 

During the operation six arrests were made by Walsall police. Ten drivers were caught driving without insurance and the vehicles were seized. One man was arrested for theft of a car which was recovered. Two people were arrested for driving while disqualified and two for theft offences.
