Kiely tempted back by stars

Wednesday 14th May 2008, 11:29AM BST.

kiely22.jpgAlbion keeper Dean Kiely today revealed that he was tempted out of international retirement by the chance to work with a trio of football legends.

The 37-year-old Baggies keeper completed a personal triumph to match that of his team by his recall to the Republic of Ireland squad after a five-year absence.

Kiely, who fought his way through some fans criticism during Albion’s march to the Championship title, was included in new manager Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad for the friendlies against Serbia in Dublin on 24 May and Colombia at Craven Cottage on 29 May.

And Kiely, who formally retired from the international stage four years ago, said today: “I first got a call from Liam Brady about this six weeks ago so I knew it was in the air.

“He wanted to find out how I felt about things although we agreed to keep the whole thing quiet because I did not want anything to detract from our promotion challenge at the time.

“But I said at the time that appointments were made that any former player would relish the chance to work with Giovanni Trapattoni, Marco Tardelli and Liam Brady and I am no different.

“They are absolute legends of the game from my youth and it’s exciting to get an opportunity to work with them.”

Kiely is back in the international spotlight in a refreshed Irish squad which includes seven uncapped players – Owen Garvan, Wes Hoolahan, Sean Scannell, Kevin Foley, Darren O’Dea, Damien Delaney and Glenn Whelan.

l Transfer talk today linked Albion with Arsenal’s Cameroon defender Alex Song but the club are not taking seriously reports that Portsmouth are prepared to pay £5m for Ishmael Miller.

l Albion have made their first signing of the close season by taking a new fitness coach from Birmingham City. Dan Harris has quit to join the Baggies after two years at St Andrew’s.

l Albion today added a fourth pre-season friendly to their schedule by confirming a match against Northampton at Sixfields on Tuesday July 29 (7.45ko).

Having been a Deanno fan all season I can feel a bit smug now (not like me i know….).

I have always felt he was doing better than people gave him credit for – that he was earning us points in certain games – and that he wasn’t always given the best cover by our outfield players….. so I’m really pleased for him that this opportunity has arisen.

I’m not sure how well he will do next year, yes his kicking is sometimes wonky, and maybe we will look at another keeper – but there is no denying that he has been a huge part of our championship winning team.

    Well done deanno !!!!!

I can understand Deano wanting to play for Ireland under the new management team, the only thing that worries me is he quit international football, like a lot of players now, so that he can continue playing at the highest level possible for as long as possible. Will this call up have an affect on his Albion form or not?

    3) Im with you, I still dont really know any more about Danek myself…is he our no 1 ion the long term??

4 – I think keepers can play on longer than outfield players – take david james, Dino Zoff etc ect… whereas outfieled players like Shearer retire from international duty to preserve their “legs”, so I think it shouldn’t affect DK too much.

just read on wba site that Deano’s won the golden glove for most clean sheets of the championship. Well done Deano!!

    5) Its a fair point, its not so much the games, its the travelling etc which i think would be the problem, on the other hand having him come back after a blinding game for the Rebublic can only do his confidence good and benefit us!

    Laura – good spot !!!

I thought wonder kid hennesey was supposed to be the best keeper !!

Deanno kept 18 clean sheets in all competitions – so much for our dodgy defense.

Solid at the back the Mowbray way – OH YES !!!

Michael – 10/10 for persistance pal – you are certainly trying hard to find a glimmer of comfort in a world of pain…

There is a whole lot of difference between us saying a player has had a bad game or been responsible for a goal – and the constant tirade and tidal wave of outright hatred and derission that wolves fans aim daily at their players, manager, board, other fans and everyone else they come into contact with.

The bile that festers at thre wolves must be oozing out the bricks now.

There is the smell of something dying coming from mol these days – and it aint pleasant !!

Henno had 19 clean sheets so not sure why kiely got an award, maybe its for all the boo’s he had to put up with or letting 4 goals in agaisnt relegated Leicester or 3 goals agaianst relegated scunthorpe etc etc, what worthy champions you are.
no wonder the players didnt want to celebrate with a bus. to embarrassed probably!!!

Henno should be given the award for the penno save at the poorthorns.

Err you do not get awards for letting in goals unless it’s from Soccer AM.

Embarrassed at winning the Championship ?

Nothing you have said makes any sense

Try applying a little logic to your comments instead of mangled nonsense.

12 – Yep, we lost against some poor teams – but, at the end of the season, we finished as CHAMPIONS.

Oh – and we had the most clean sheets and we also scored the most goals, not to mention winning the most points. Whoever says we don’t deserve our promotion as champions is clearly jealous. The facts speak for themselves!

8 said kiely got 18 clean sheets in all competitions! henno got 19 clean sheets in all competions. that part is fact. the award (which ive not checked) must be for league games.

this season has been a poor league for the championship. teams like hull bristol stoke havnt done well at all but teams like wba wolves watford charlton have had terible seasons with the teams at the bottom getting more points than normal and teams at the top getting less.
its not really a great achivement winning the league this season
2 games before the end of the season we could of either finished 3rd or 10th!!! what sort of a league is that.
i bet your glad to be out of it tho now and i would of settles for 2nd or a playoff final to get out of this terrible league.
If you lot had won the league by 10 points and only lost 2 or 3 games, then it wouldnt be embarrasing to win it but when ur only close rivals are an average hull and stoke side that will get killed in the prem then its a sad season.
    and yes im bitter :)

Dingles calling us fickle! Hahahaha, have you heard anything like it, the same ‘fans’ that were singing Mick’s praises after they won TWO games in a row.
Lets see what you do when you don’t go up next season either, the problem with you lot is you seem to dismiss all the other teams around and think you have some right to be in the premiership.

Boing Boing Premier League! You won’t be joining us!

How can winning a league be embarrasing? What would have happened if Wolves had won the league. Would you be embarrased. I don’t think so. You are talking rubbish.

If you recall, the teams that came down were Watford, Charlton and Sheff Utd. All teams that strenghtened. Charlton had been an established Prem side and Sheff Utd spent really big. We sold our so called best players and still won the league.

    Embarrasing??? I think not!

Can’t believe I’m disagreeing with you twice in a couple of days. Moron really doesn’t do this individual justice, although you’ve obviously written this without seeing posting No 17. This bloke is going to give Laughing, Optimistic, WW, LCW, SBBA a run for their money. Can’t work out if it’s just a wind up or if he actually believes his pathetic ramblings.

I agree that yeah 12 is talking a bit of rubbish, but you call him a moron. Yet when you was doing it the other week and I took offence, you told me to lighten up and that it was banter and shouldn’t be on the boards. Well I did as you said and have just been watching the boards and suprise suprise look who’s doing the same. Lighten up eh?

Realist – sorry pal, i don’t understand…. I think his posts justify my calling him a moron – I don’t use the term lightly but occassionally its accurate.

I don’t mind banter as you know – but there has to be some grain of either truth ot humour.. just posting banal anti albion (or wolves) posts is just….. moronic !

Realist – TWB winds people up by a) deliberatley spelling Mowbray wrong and b) putting boing boing on the end of his posts.

He rarely delves deeper than that – but to some people its a red rag…. its not poetic, but it is often funny.

anyway – thanks for a decent discussion.
