Albion boss to monitor Euro battle

Wednesday 14th May 2008, 12:19PM BST.

wd2764087albion-28-dh-8.jpgTony Mowbray today admitted that his summer transfer plans could be heavily influenced by events at this summer’s European Championships.

The Baggies boss has revealed that he does have targets set to figure in the tournament who will be monitored either by himself or his coaching staff.

But Mowbray knows that as newcomers to the Premier League, his chances of landing the players he wants could be seriously hampered if they hit the headlines at the showcase event.

Albion have already confirmed that Polish midfielder Radoslaw Majewski who has made it to the last 26 to be trimmed to 22 for his nation’s challenge in Austria and Switzerland, is on their radar.

And Mowbray has made it clear that he wants to stock up Albion for the Premier challenge with the kind of low-key, under-the-radar deals which brought Filipe Teixeira, Bostjan Cesar and Roman Bednar to the club a year ago.

And he admits: “We have some targets who will be playing for their countries at Euro 08 so we will be covering it, although we don’t have the resources for blanket covrage.

“We can target specific games and watch specific players, but the problem is the rest of the world is watching.

“We might like a player and if he has a particularly good tournament everybody else becomes aware of him and his price goes up.

“The trick is to try to identify them before tournaments and get them signed before it hits the rest of the world.”

Albion’s re-vamped European scouting network has only been up and running in the last couple of months, said Mowbray, which has restricted their information flow. And he is adamant he will not recommend money going out on players he has not seen in the flesh.

Too little to late imo. We should already be down the road of signing people, Hope we don’t catch a cold and have a slow start trying to integrate players.

Interesting Mr.Mowbary. But of course any half baked agent would ensure that his players are not signed up until after the championships for the very reason that the games are a ‘shop window’ to the world of football.

You also have the Birmingham factor. Who wants to go there without being desperate.

Good luck on your buys but I suggest you take more time over ensuring your best players are not sold off to Premiership clubs.

What will you Tesco’s fans do next year when you don’t see your team scoring as if they invented the practice? I bet your ‘boo boys’can’t wait

Only lowley Coventry interested in any of your donkeys. You might get a job lot offer from Blackpool, as they have done the seafront up !
First team players one wekk the next all up for the chop and the captain as well ! It’s as if MM is trying to see how much he can get away with ? He not only does it, but keeps telling you he is doing it and all at the Molineux are behind him and YOU FANS have to swollow it !
I know Sir Tony Mowbray will do the best he can with the cash and knowledge he has.
    WE BAGGIES FANS TRUST HIM.

    6. laff, do you copy and paste that comment, or keep on typing it out all by yourself? It’s a little bit of silliness, and if you really believe in it then you are obviously a little bit simple.

Interestingly, I wonder if you have any serious idea of what Mr Morgan is putting in the kitty, and how do you suspect MM will spend it? Do they have plans to monitor the top European players this summer?

11 – I see you have found the elusive Dingleverse – the place where wolves are better than albion and wolves fans have the bragging rights.

A place where wolves stormed into the premier league on a wave of goals and free flowing football whilst the poor old boggies have to miss out – again.

A place where you can take the micky out of your poor neighbiours and laugh at their feeble attempts to find some comfort…

Hows the weather there – I’m guessing its cold – but not too lonely… you have a few like minded space cowboys to keep you company.

Once again Wolves will try to buy success and fail miserably.

Well said. To emphasise again, we will be spending money we’ve earned rather than a windfall from another misguided benefactor or welshing on our creditors.
