Boss hoping to find some bargains

Tony Mowbray today warned Albion fans that not all of their summer recruits will be big-money signings.
The Baggies boss is on the lookout for bargains in the close season as well as significant cash buys as he looks to beef up his squad for an assault on the Premier League.
He said: “You get to a level where you start looking at a player who is going to improve your team and you can’t afford the transfer fee or the wages either.
“Don’t be surprised this summer if there are a few pretty low-cost signings where we buy the quality and the talent.
“We have seen examples like Robert Koren and Shelton Martis, who have contributed this season.
“There might be players who we recognise and like the talent of, but they cost practically nothing.
“The assumption is that we are going to go out and spend millions. I don’t believe we always have to do that. There is a media-driven impression that if you don’t spend £40m you’ve got no chance. Time will tell whether that is right or wrong.
“Hopefully we will spend a few quid on some players, but there will also be some players brought in that we gamble on a little bit.”
Mowbray is likely to have to strengthen the fringes of his squad with Premier League rules changing next season to allow seven subs.

I am behind TM all the way. Only spend cash if it will improve the team considerably. Usually the big transfer fees means a high wage bill for the player. You have to find the value for money players and if they are no better than what we have, keep the cash awhile.

Players are born with some difference in footballing ability,but it’s clubs that decide to pay 1 mil. or 50mil. for one guy.In other words,many players are overpriced,so TM has shown you can get quality (Koren,Tex,etc.)on the cheap if you know where to look.Have faith in his judgement.

Its going to be bargain basement signings unfortunately. Reports from Ireland suggest Paddy McCourt will be one of the first. Apparently a bit of a talent but not what the fans expect. However, Mowbray did find Sproule of Bristol City.

If there’s one lesson we’ve learnt from the life of Bryan, it’s don’t go for ‘stars’ in decline. It may have a very short term benefit but ultimately it’s counter productive. They want big money and expect to dictate when they play. Before anyone sites KP, players like him, Strachan and Speed are exceptions. Young and hungry must be the way forward.

oh dear, you may have the edge at the moment but how its going to swing back and stay with wolves in the next few years. reduced capacity at the poorthorns, bargain signings,giving 3000 tickets to local schools, tickets for a £10 to try to fill the ground when your winning the league & a chairman with very limited ambition, you just sold your best youth team player to pompey! look across to the bigger club 12 miles down the road, new quality signings, 40000 stadium (which would be easily filled in the prem) enjoy next season but you wont get more than 30 points. cheerio to your 2 best players.

33 Laughing Wolf, I think you need to wear a hat when the sun is out mate then you would be able to keep hold of what little marbles you actually have. Quality signings?, who exactly? 40,000 seater stadium with 20,000 at best inside it, makes loads of sense. A football team capable a of mid table place at best currently in the Championship with a manger who plays football in the dark ages with little hope of going anywhere.
I think the truth hurts.

Lateef Elford Alliyu is the young lad you’re thinking of. England U-16 international and already playing for the reserves age FIFTEEN!! Scored a goal from 40 yards out in a pre-season friendly!! The other lad Hirst is also gonna be top quality tho and it’s sad to lose him but we picked up David Worrall from Bury last season in much the same manner, it happens!!
McShane is a complete non-starter! Awful at Prem level!! I’d take David Murphy off the Blues tho!?!?
