Peace: We’ll fight to keep gaffer

Friday 9th May 2008, 12:23PM BST.

Tony MowbrayAlbion chairman Jeremy Peace has insisted he has the ambition to keep Championship-winning Tony Mowbray at The Hawthorns for the long-term.

Mowbray was today celebrating his second manager of the month award at The Hawthorns as Peace spoke out about the threat of bigger clubs poaching his manager.

Mowbray has been linked with his former club Middlesbrough and was an outside bet with the bookies when it looked recently as if Gordon Strachan would lose his job at Celtic.

And the Baggies attractive style of play, which has seen them score more than 100 goals for the last two seasons, has left fans nervous of an approach from bigger clubs.

But Peace is confident he can keep Mowbray at the club thanks to the “happiness factor” that has been created at the club.

“I’m sure he’ll be on a few lists,” said Peace. “It’s up to us as a football club to make sure he stays with us and stays happy.

“When he joined us I said to Tony that we would just try to provide him with the platform to be successful.

“We’ve achieved that this season and I know he’s very anxious for the Premier League challenge.

“I think it’s the job for me and our colleagues on the board to try to provide Tony with the platform to continue to succeed and hopefully, if our ambitions remain in the same place, Tony will be happy to continue with us.

“It’s a very good working relationship which we all have with Tony, and I think you’ve seen from the way the players are with him that he has their respect.

“I’m hoping we can make a good fist of it next season.

“We’ve stuck to our principles.

“Tony wanted to set the team up a certain way and play open, attacking football,” added Peace.

    read the story.

it’s inevitable that TM will be associated with perceived “bigger” clubs, just as wolves better players are being linked with moves to perceived “bigger” clubs.

There’s not even any major vacancies and there’s talk about him being tied to us. This is Peace making the position clear before anyone even approaches us in my opinion.

Let’s be honest, To Mo has been successful in the Championship and in the SPL. We all know that this does not necessarily translate into success in the Prem. The only way To Mo will be going is if a bigger, better challenge came along (a club in Europe) and I can’t see them taking the risk on someone unproven in the top flight.

If we stay up next season (even if it’s on goal difference with 12 points), then we may see that kind of club approaching us, but I don’t think that would happen until a second season of Prem football is guaranteed.

Don’t get me wrong here but this is your biggest problem. I’m not saying that the likes of Liverpool or Man U are gonna come calling but you have to admit that the success TM has had is going to attract attention ! The Premier clubs that are languishing in mid-table and are looking to go somewhwere are gonna sit up and pay attention. Links have already been made with the likes of Middlesborough so you know what to expect. I think tha TM is a genuine sort of bloke and I think he want’s to see the job done with you. however……….

I reckon Mowbray will stay with the Baggies for a long time. He’s ambitious but has his head screwed on. He knows that success has to be built on the right foundations, and our club gives him every chance to make a big impact on the prem. He will have many admirers and opportunites to move but he would have to weigh up how long he will be given at these supposed ‘big’ clubs, M’boro excepted. Mowbray is a top manager and a top bloke. Peace has struck gold.

I don’t think Tony will be going anywhere soon. He seems like a very honourable man and not the sort to walk away when he’s only just started something. I think there are things he wants to achieve with WBA.

Also aren’t the rules on managers switching clubs a lot stricter in the Premiership, it will obviously be easier to keep him anyway now we are in the top flight.

The current Albion team is one Mowbray’s built. Many players he’s signed (Brunt, Morrison, Miller, Tex, L Moore) are players for the future which suggests he’s not about to jump ship to a team that another manager has built….

Why would Tony want to go ? He has achieved what he wanted, but now wants to proove himself in the Premier league. Celtic would not pose such a challenge as you know they will finish in the top 3 whoever takes over. Better to have the challenge of gathering a Premiership squad to stay up firstly and then to stay up for a few seasons. If it is money then he could have gone anytime last year. I think fans can see he is happy at the Hawthorns for the time being and he knows if he asked for a bit more cash he would get it.
Great to see so many Dingles snapes again they are sooooooooooo envious. I for one won’t buy the Hotton Courir to see how they are getting on next season. Any lower and they will drop off the coupon !

Its a difficult time for us, Tony Mowbury has done a great job, but like Billy Davies he is a great manager at championship level, but an unknown at premier standard. Im worried about silly signings being made by a man with no premier experience (it hurts me to say it). Perhaps its best we say thanks very much and pay him off now and bring someone in who can take things forward, Up the Albion.

    29. On the subject of posting on each others sites. I think if you check you will find that it’s weighted about 4 to 1 more Wolves on ours than vice versa. I’ve no problem with this, after all it is a very heavily Wolverhampton biased newspaper.
On the subject of the article. I think TM is that rare thing in football, a man of his word, however I do believe in ‘never say never.’ Let’s cross this bridge when we actually come to it and in the meantime bask all summer in going to the prem the Mobury way. Sorry for the liberty TWB.

Mowbray always said he wanted to create a team that would do well in the premiership and he probably has providing you keep your ‘cutting edge’. However portsmouth showed you that having all the play without goals is heartbreaking.

I think you are better than the Reading side that did well two years ago and I don’t think you’ll struggle providing you add a couple of quality defenders.

I’m glad you got up but you will probably lose Mowbray if you secure your place but that needn’t be fatal. I’m looking forward to playing you again in 2009/2010 and preferably 9probably) in the premiership. (I can dream can’t I ??????)
