Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

McCarthy’s warning to his top stars
Friday 9th May 2008, 12:15PM BST.
Tough-line Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has warned his in-demand young stars they will get short shrift asking for improved deals.
Several Premier League clubs have been eyeing Wayne Hennessey, Michael Kightly and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
All are locked under long term contract and Hennessey yesterday pledged his future to the Molineux cause at least for another year.
But McCarthy insists no one should be looking for better contracts in the light of the club’s failure to make the play-offs.
“It’s interesting that people are suggesting these players now attracting interest should come in and ask for new deals,” said McCarthy.
“We aren’t in the play-offs and this is a collective thing. If we got through the play-offs, then we might all be looking at new deals – me and Jez included.
“But we’re not, so collectively – which is what it is – do we deserve to be sat down re-negotiating? I don’t think we do. It’s turned full circle.”
McCarthy accepts players have to be looked after, but stressed he won’t be pushing the boat out just because the players demand more money.
“We have to keep them happy in terms of the way we play football and the contracts that they have,” said the boss. “But the environment they come to work in is a good one which they all enjoy. I’m not completely wet behind the ears – I know people come in and talk to them. That’s the way it goes.
“There are no talks planned because they are all under contract.
“But we have always been very pro-active in the fact that if they sign contracts, they get promised that if they do well, we’ll sit down and talk about it and re-negotiate. That has happened and I have said to all of them who we’ve been in discussions with, that when the time is right, it gets done.”
“Don’t forget, we missed out on the play-offs. Everyone can be as negative as they like, but I’m trying to put the positive side forward.”

This is where Thick Mick really does excel.
What the hell is he doing talking to the papers about things like this?
He is a personal PR disaster.

I remember Jez Moxey got £500,000 bonus when we got to Premier. Will he take a pay cut now?

I’m also positive – positive that we would be playing Premiership football next season if our tactics for long spells of the season hadn’t of been so tactically inept !
I’m also positive that in twelve months time we may be having the same conversations !

Keep hold of these Mick, dont let us be a feeder club and bring in some quality (3 or 4) thats should be enough! Still surprised we have released Edwards, perhaps it was his injuries?
Agree with what Mick’s saying but shouldn’t this all be kept behind closed doors.
Well, didn’t MM got a new contract just a few months ago?
Does Mick really think we need reminding we missed out on the play-offs?
How can he put a positive spin on anything that has occured this season? This season has relied on one player which just shows the poor level of planning that MM has. The amount of MM players that are available fot transfer is Shocking and with s-blakes possisble incarceration we could be in the same position next season

Don’t forget, we missed out on the play-offs.
WELL GUESS WHAT..WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN!!!!!!!!!
NEXT SEASON BETTER BE MORE PRODUCTIVE..EVEN THO’ I STILL SAY..QUICKER YOUR SACKED THE BETTER.

this guy is gone beyond moronic. I thought Steve Morgan has got the say so over new deals not Mcarthy! But keep them coming MM I hope you talk yourself out of a job!

This is really going to impress good young players to join us. Why doesn’t he just shut-up. What a non-sense of a story too. The E&S are guilty of printing too much like this that just gets supporters riled.
It would be great if the Wolves can learn from their mistakes over the past 4 years and bring players in early. We always seem to sign players in the first week in August and then make an excuse as to why we have made a slow start “the players are still bedding in” “this player is not match fit cos he’s been eating paella all summer”
It would be nice if the owner told us what the club’s plan is. Do we have a budget to spend a decent amount of money? I havent renewed yet and this is the type of thing that people want to hear. I will renew come what may but I was personally hoping that MM would not be at the helm.
But….he is, so the pressures on him to deliver

If ever there is something that proves how thick some Wolves fans are.
The comments on this site do that and more.
You really are a bunch of numpties.
What he has said is spot on.
I have no doubt he told the players, then some reporter asked if we were going to offer improved contracts to Kightly, Hennesey, and Blake, to keep them.
This was his reply.
Let me guess you were all chanting Freddie, Freddie, totally ignoring the divisions leading socrer.

southbank barmy army you need to calm down.
Whats happened has happened.
Mick’s not going so we might as well get behind him, let not forget what he did in his 1st season and you dont go cr@p over night.
I’m as disappointed as the next, but this is Morgan 1st full season lets see what he gives to Mick.
So lets give him this season.
If we’d have gone up, i could have seen us come right back down as our squad wasnt strong enough.
Lets strengthen again this summer and if we go up strengthen again and me might have a chance of stopping there then.
I cant see Kites, Ebanks, Jarvis or Hessessey going, so i see it as onwards and upwards.
If not get rid then.

Is there anyone out there that can tell me why this man is still managing our club?
Without resorting to “lets get behind the lads” cliché
I have seen the Three year plan idea but I saw no improvement from year one in fact the quite the opposite
Please no more Ferguson did not achieve straight away at Man U arguments I see no comparison
Last season at this time I was disappointed at losing in the play offs but excitedly looking forward to the new season a young hungry side that with a couple of additions could really go places
This year what do we have
A schism between supporters driven by McCarthy’s strange tactics team selection and “witty” comments
A team that could be without a proven goal scorer (again) if SEB’s court case goes the way some are saying.
A Manager with a poor track record.
Lowest points total in the premiership (before Derby) lowest number of goals scored in the premiership
Created a division within the Irish national team (how strange)
I can see we must start next season with McCarthy but I really fear for it
Without a flying start the knives will well and truly be out and another season lost.

Do you realise how stupid some of you sound. What ever McCarthy does you manage to find an angle to moan from. Do any of you have anything positive to say? Some Albion fans are more positive about the Wolves than you lot.
McCarthy has never, and probably will never discose a lot of the conversations that happen at the club – he has neve commented on McIndoe, so he will never admit what is being done behind the scenes for players he wants to keep.
He is also not going to slag players off if he can avoid it – as that only provides ammunition to opposing teams – plus you lot do that for him.
Some of you need to grow up. McCarthy is staying, regardless of how much you want him to go or stay. He is in charge, and he is making the decisions. Get used to it, and back the club.

IF THEY WANT BETTER DEALS, GIVE THEM BETTER DEALS YOU THICK IDIOT, IT ISN’T COLLECTIVE BECAUSE HENNESSEY IS A KEEPER WHAT CAN HE DO TO SCORE GOALS, SEB JOINED US IN JAN AND KEPT US IN THE PROMOTION RACE AND KITES HAS BEEN INJURED ALL SEASON!!!!! SO GIVE THEM BETTER DEALS TO STOPUS BEING A SELLING CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing Mick is yes he is stubborn (have you ever met a man from Barnsley that is,nt)and certainly not thick.Degogatory comments serve no purpose at all does anybody really think he does,nt want to get back to the premier league with all the money that would come his way. This season as bad as it has been we were only four wins from winning it thats not bad is it? Next season with a couple of good signings we will walk it, guaranteed. No pressure there then.

22. i agree with you whole heartedly!!!!
theres too much moaning goin on here & whats done is done the season is over & we cant change that. all we can do is look to the new season!!
while i agree that mm shouldnt be talking to the press abt this he is right that theres no reason any of them should have their contracts negotiated as they didnt do what they were meant to this season!
How can MM say he is trying to put the positive side forward, when he says there will be no deals, that the workplace is a happy one and the way we play football will keep them happy. Look how many players have been saying about how disappointing not making the playoffs was. How can you be happy when you did not make the playoffs, you are not having any more money and the manager rubs your nose in the fact. I think I may take up fishing the lakes behind MM ears ?

Come in No 19 your time is up. The men in white coats are at your door.
You clearly lack the intelligence to offer a valid opinion. Just because you’ve played Football Manager a few times you think you know everything.
Players play for a team. They should take collective responsibilty whether results are going badly or good.
90% of people on these boards are idiots.

Mick has another year to go – lets see what he does?
What I find extraordinary about football, and Wolves in particular, is that the manager is always on the firing line!
Why not fire the coaches who didn’t coach, the ‘sales’ who didn’t make enough money to buy better staff, the CEO who hasn’t got a strategy or the Chairman who largely remains silent about how we are going to get out of this *****!
This is not even a football game anymore; it a business run by transient people and the guys who run it won’t let us know what they are doing because its ‘a secret’ – or perhaps that an excuse for, ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’!
I for one did NOT want to get into the playoffs because I can’t stand anymore misery!
Whose fault is that ? I know – let’s blame the manager!
We’re all missing the big picture here. Stop getting at McCarthy or any of the players. The big failure in all of this is Moxey, but as useless as he has been in moving us forward in his time in charge, next August I for one will be 100% behind all of them, even Moxey.
Wake up Wolves fans, we have no god given right to be in the Premier League and we’re going to have to work our socks off and have some degree of good fortune just to get into the playoffs.
