Edwards: Baggies pain drives us on

Thursday 8th May 2008, 5:00PM BST.

Midfielder David Edwards admits the sight of seeing Albion and Stoke’s promotion celebrations have inspired him to make sure Wolves join them next season.

For Edwards, disappointment at missing out on the play-offs was compounded by not being able to affect matters on the pitch. The Welsh international could have played in Sunday’s curtain call against Plymouth at a push, but was still regaining fitness after a knee injury.

And, as he watched the champagne corks popping at Loftus Road, where arch rivals Albion clinched their first title for 88 years, and the Britannia Stadium, where Stoke sealed their return to the top flight for the first time in 24 years, he admitted it was a humbling feeling.

“I was watching the game on Sunday from one of the boxes and we had Sky on at the back to see what all the scores were,” said Edwards.

“We saw the scenes at QPR and the Britannia and how much they were celebrating – it meant a lot to both teams as it would to us.

“Of course it’s something Wolves fans want to see as well, having gone up to the Premier League a few years ago.

“But since then it’s been maybe in the play-offs, maybe not, and we haven’t really been kicking on at the top of the league even though we’re definitely a big enough club to be able to do it. It was heartbreaking to miss out on the play-offs and the chance to get to the Premier League because everyone wants to be there.”

Edwards, who is set to face Wolves team-mate Michael Kightly in a Wales v England friendly at under-21 level at Wrexham next Thursday, believes Wolves have the backbone of a promotion-winning team.

“I’m sure the chairman is going to help the manager with new players and the manager knows what he’s got and what he wants,” he said.

“I’m sure a few more will be added but we’ve definitely got a good enough nucleus to the squad to gain promotion. Hopefully with a few fresh faces in the summer it will liven things up.”

    Totally agree, enough is enough.

When I was a kid I said I was going to play for Wolves, I didn’t because I wasn’t good enough…. I think it’s time for the majorty of the Woles squad to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask themselves the same question!!!

We want people who deliver on their promises not people who talk the talk and then say “NEXT YEAR WE WILL WIN PROMOTION”

    Lets look at the facts.
Albion have gained promotion, by good management from the director and the manager/s over the last 6/7 years no one has came and given them millions of pounds paid off debts etc, they have sold good players at the right price and invested the monies back into the club intrastucture and on good unknown players and unfortuantly for me have proved that they are a well run club on and off the field. Even the situation with the organised celebrations not going ahead does not make any difference as they are champions and made the semi finals of the fa cup.
Now my team and it upsets me to say it but….
we have been bailed out by Sir Jack we now have a millionare chairman, we have a wonderful ground and training facilties plenty of money to spend on players, I believe that we only pay a very small amount of council tax on our ground thanks to wolverhampton cc,our gates are above the boggies, we are a bigger club ( or are we)so WHY !!!!
have we failed to reach the play offs and failed over recent years to be were we should be the PREMIERSHIP it really gets me mad can anyone tell me WHY my beloved club WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS FC ARE STIL IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN BOLTON, WIGAN, BOGGIES,READING,ETC ARE IN THE PREMIERSHIP AND WE ARE NOT!!!!!!!!!!

Dont you lot ever stop going on about us getting relegated? Why not just accept that we got promoted as champions and just concentrate on your own teams successes instead of having our potential failures as the only successes you have?

You celebrated when we went out of the fa cup, the irony that we had got to the semis, way further than you had.You are going on about us getting relegated next season, conveniently skimming over the fact that we went up as champions this season while your lot didnt even make the playoffs.

Honestly. It is getting to be embarrassing!Follow your own club instead of watching us with envy.

I’m Wolves through & through but I’ve simply had enough.

I’m tired of numerous Wolves players, & I use the term lightly in some cases, coming on the E&S & spouting all this drivel. Its as bad as the majority of the football I & thousands like me, especially fellow season ticket holders, have had to endure this season. Very few of these players have made much if any effort all season long & then they have the audacity to treat us fans like second class idiots, and to coin a phrase used by MM, nuggets.

Since Sunday we’ve had Breen at least twice, Foley, Edwards, Henry and added to them, the three M’s as I call them talking rubbish. Every one of them has made excuses for last season and come out with some complete tosh about how next season will be better, we’re all disappointed, and we’ll be champions and get promoted….please.

I know there are lots of season ticket holders who did not take advantage of the early bird offer and who have no intention of re-newing at all, and I’m one of them because right now I feel very let down by the football club I love and have supported all my life, and before anybody says I’m not a “real” fan, what ever one of those is, I’ve been watching Wolves at Molineux and away for 30 years.

I don’t see Wolves doing anything different next season, but I sincerely hope the club proves me wrong & if they do then I’ll be the first to accept I was wrong. I’m glad we didn’t make the playoffs because I would have hated to see us “do a Derby”.

Having said that I’ll still be supporting them from a far as I’m leaving Wolves due to work and will always be proud to be a Wolves fan. Its just a shame the club, the players and the people who run it don’t feel the same way about the fans.

You think that we are going up next season? let me tell you exactly what will happen, after MM has got rid of Freddy he has just set himself up for a barage of pure abuse from the kick off and i cant say he doesn’t deserve it.

I used to like the bloke but his stubborn attitude and total lack of being touch with us supporters is beyond belief. Getting rid of Freddy (a decent player in my book) is not that bigger deal but it becomes massive when you dont get rid of people like:

    S WARD, S ELLIOTT, N COLLINS, KEVIN KYLE, D POTTER, D GIBSON.

I cannot believe his comments saying “he has not done well enough at times” when he was you dropped him. THEN WHEN DID YOU GIVE HIM ANOTHER CRACK? you just dont like the chap end of.

He hated the way supporters acted against elliot, collins etc (which i dont condone at all) but it was then obvious you hated us fans, so every opportunity he had he had a sly dig, radio interviews, not doing lap of honour etc.

    Bottom line:

from kick off next yr all the haters will be on your back, which adds to pressure on team to succed, which results in being booed at every substitution, draw or bad result at home.

SO JUST LEAVE BECAUSE WE NO LONGER ENJOY OUR FOOTBALL AT THE MOLINEUX YOU MUPPET!

You lot make me laugh. If you want the reasons for your failure yet again have a look at how our two clubs have been run both on and off the pitch.
Our chairman talks about giving the manager the platform for building success and yours goes on the pitch after the last game spouting on about how bad everone feels. Our manager talks about attacking expansive football yours talks about everyone putting in a shift! I would suggest that the way the baggies have gone about building the club over the last few years getting stronger and stronger each year is now the benchmark for many clubs. You can’t expect success overnight! Do you think it is a coincidence that the most successful clubs in the country have one thing in common? The longest serving managers in the country Fergie & wenger
MM has not become a bad manager overnight he needs time to get things right but most of you lot on here will no doubt hound another good manager out of the game……Rant over!

NB* Message to ALL Wolves players – STOP coming out with such futile meaningless clap trap – Its not going to help you or the club and certainly wont change anyones mind about buying a season ticket – the time for action has passed you by and the season for us is over – try and do your “talking” out on the pitch instead of in the media! I have often wondered how Spurs fans and man City fans cope with the success of their local rivals. The Wolves fans have provided the answer……by pointing out their rivals faliures like not winning the European CL when they have just won the Prem. Grow up Dingles.
