Prince William is making his first official visit to the Black Country this weekend when he calls into Walsall for a water polo competition.

The prince will start the final of the national schools water polo competition at the town’s Gala Baths.

He will stay to watch some of the match, which will bring back memories of when he competed in the English Schools Swimming Association’s competitions.

Now patron of the association, he will be the guest of honour at Saturday’s event and is due to arrive in town at 10.50am, staying until 12.15pm.

Civic dignitaries will be at the Gala Baths to welcome the royal guest including the Mayor and Mayoress of Walsall Councillor Melvin Pitt and Abigail Pitt, Walsall Council chief executive Paul Sheehan, the High Sheriff of the West Midlands Byron Head, Lord Lieutenant Paul Sabapathy and Clerk to the Lieutenancy Lynda Hopkins.

Walsall Council chief executive Paul Sheehan said: “It is fantastic that Prince William has chosen Walsall as his first place to visit in the West Midlands. 

“The Gala Baths is recognised as being one of the most important venues for water polo and the Prince’s visit really puts Walsall on the map in terms of national recognition within the sport.”

John Beddoe, a trustee and treasurer of the ESSA, said: “The facilities and staff at the Gala Baths are first class and so it is very fitting that Prince William is visiting the area. We are delighted.”
