No action on pool pleas

Monday 5th May 2008, 10:56AM BST.

In his letter (April 14), Cllr Billson asks me to get my facts right. He then goes on to agree with me regarding the running costs of a swimming pool and does not disprove anything else in my original correspondence

He claims that to build a leisure centre would cost each of the 4,500 householders £720 over five years. This amounts to £144 a year and £2.77 per week for each household. My argument is that all South Staffordshire taxpayers contribute to leisure centres in South Staffordshire. If spread among the 44,500 South Staffordshire Council Tax payers the cost per week would be only 28p.

Due to Cllr Billson’s comments regarding the Perton Parish Plan I have checked the timeline of events, which makes interesting reading.

In January 2007 the plan results were presented to the parish council which showed 88 per cent requesting a leisure centre with pool. A February meeting then followed to discuss an action plan.

In April 2007 Cllr Billson issued his election address to residents of Perton East and, commenting on the parish plan, said, “as elected members we were making decisions on your behalf without having the decency to ask what you wanted. We now have the results of the plan and intend to form a programme addressing the issues you identified.”

Since last year’s elections he and his colleagues have showed little respect to any of the wishes of the parish plan.

I and my Independent colleagues will continue to pursue leisure facilities for Perton, that all age ranges can use.

Cllr Anthony Bourke, Perton Lakeside Ward, Perton Parish Council.
