Plans to re-open an eyesore former petrol station on Wolverhampton’s Tettenhall Road have been dramatically thrown out.

Esso wanted to revive the derelict Newbridge Service Station but planning chiefs have refused it saying the development is of poor design and would be detrimental to its neighbours.

It means the landmark site, which has been a blot on the landscape since it closed in 2005, will remain untouched for many more months.

It emerged today Marks and Spencer had been eyeing up the spot for a potential store but dropped its plans several months ago.

A city councillor today called for the site, next door to the Newbridge pub, to be redeveloped following years of complaints from residents in Newbridge and Tettenhall that it is dragging the area down.

Esso, which ran the petrol station until it closed, wanted to create a new retail building, forecourt canopy and pumps, car parking and two cash machines.

It was the second time since the closure the petrol giant has attempted to reopen it. It withdrew a similar plan in 2006.

Tim Clark, spokesman for Wolverhampton City Council, said: “The plans have been refused on the grounds of poor design, over-development of the site and detriment to neighbour’s amenity.”

Shadow vice chair of planning, councillor Jonathan Yardley, who represents Tettenhall Regis ward, said: “I’m sure if Esso spoke to the planning officers they could agree on a plan that would benefit everyone.”
