Motor enthusiasts and people interested in a rummage through the memories and memorabilia of one of the world’s best-loved sports commentators will find a lot to interest them in a book penned by a Worcestershire man.

The Murray Walker Scrapbook, written by Philip Porter, from Knighton-on-Teme, near Kidderminster, is crammed with personal details. It deals with the fast-paced action and sometimes ruthless world associated with Formula 1.

Murray has over the years become as famous as many of the drivers on whom he has commentated, and his knowledge and enthusiasm became a beacon for millions of fans.

Philip’s book is crammed with personal anecdotes and behind-the-scenes information from every stage of his career, with more than 500 images from Formula 1 action including amazing photographs of racing drivers such as Jackie Stewart and Emerson Fittipaldi.

There are also contributions from many of his colleagues including Nigel Mansell, who used to live at Wythall in north Worcestershire, and Lewis Hamilton.

Philip, aged 56, met Murray through his association with and previous books on Stirling Moss, and they quickly formed a bond.

Although Philip took part in hill climbs in his youth, he never progressed to professional racing and said he was thrilled to be working with people who are his heroes.

Published tomorrow by Porter Press International, the book will sell as a standard edition hardback at £34.95 and as a special leather-bound deluxe limited edition signed by both Murray and Philip for £75.

After writing more than 20 motoring books, Philip, who has lived in Worcestershire for more than 30 years, is now working on one about the artist Alan Fearnley, many of whose paintings are of classic cars.

He also runs two successful international car clubs – the Jaguar E-type Club and Jaguar XK Club.
