The 3-0 win on Tuesday night was predominately down to one player, Michael Kightly, who put in probably the best performance from a Wolves player I’ve seen all season and he wasn’t even fully fit, writes blogger Nathan Lloyd.
We may have been playing a team who’s minds were dreaming of Wembley (remind me how they were good enough to get to a final again?). But Kightly’s terrific performance added some much needed quality to the Wolves midfield on Tuesday and brought the best out of players like Olofinjana, who hasn’t been at his best recently.
It wasn’t pleasant to hear the crowd’s reaction to the introduction of Elliott and Collins. It’s difficult to translate whether the crowd is booing because Freddy isn’t coming on or because they dislike the player Mick is bringing on. Either way, I’m not a big fan of booing any player in gold and black.
The pantomime booing that ex-Blues and Albion player Darren Purse received every time he jogged up towards the South Bank was much more amusing. Especially as it was interrupted by cheering for Michael Oakes as he trotted forwards.
So, here we are then. Still in with an unexpected chance of a play-off place. I won’t go over all the permutations again, I’m sure you have studied the league and speculated whether Palace will win their 2 remaining fixtures against Hull and Burnley or if Watford will beat Scunthorpe or Blackpool. It is bound to come down to the last game of the season and we all know that we need to win both games to still be in with a shout.
Coventry’s 5-1 win mauling of Colchester last Saturday shouldn’t mask the fact that they have had an awful season. Colchester had nothing to play for, having already been relegated a few weeks ago. Coventry on the other hand were fighting for their survival and although they are only 3 points above the drop zone, I think they are as good as safe and such do the decent thing and let us win.
With the ever growing traveling army going to the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, I would expect that the Wolves fans should be able to make it seem like a home game. In fact, given how quiet Molineux has been recently, I would expect the noise levels to be much higher.
This is what the play-offs are all about, keeping the excitement going till the very end of the season and if we can get nudge in to that top six; with Kightly back I don’t think we should fear any team.
I was fully expecting to start writing my “where did it all go wrong” blog, but it’s so much nicer to still be in the thick of it and in with a chance of joining the Albion in the promise land next season.
Oh and a quick thank you to Alfred Camilleri, who is the president of the Maltese Wolves Supporters Club. Alfred is just one of many presidents of Wolves incredible supporter clubs all over the world. He posted me out a copy of the Malta Wolves magazine. I was expecting a black and white photocopied effort. What I received instead was something akin to a matchday program, really superb quality and unlike the Wolves official matchday program, it was readable!
My parents, Carol and Alan are out in Malta this week and Alfred took time out to meet them for a beer (or 7) yesterday, so I thank him for that.
Good luck to the boys tomorrow, I’m confident we can come away with the 3 points to keep us on track.

Hi Nathan. It certainly breathed a new life into the team to have Kites back even if only in second gear. His versatility and class lit up a fairly mediocre game even though scoring three goals, allowed us the forgotten luxury of being able to relax with a win in the bag. I may be a little greedy but a more enterprising substitution could’ve yielded us further success against a side that offered very little. With the goal difference a vital ingredient come the end of the season, perhaps one or two more goals could prove critical. I’m sure if we can win our last two games, one of the teams will slip up, possibly Bristol City are looking as vulnerable as any.
I would have to put SEB’s performance at Charlton as the best I’ve seen this season.
I can’t wait for the match to kick-off tomorrow, once again my hopes of reaching the promised land have been rekindled.

hi nathan..i said on wednesday morning in reply to a few comments..nobody was booing elliot or collins as they came on..the boos were aimed at mick mcarthy. as for freddy..like everyone else, we in the southbank are resigned to the fact he won’t play for us again and that he will leave in the summer. unfortunately freddy has become the excuse needed to get at muppet. i would say that mcarthy is now one of the most unpopular managers wolves had ever had. where we sit and the large section around us, the annimosity towards him is unbelievable..even when we’re winning.
that said..the team do get our support, i’ll be there saturday full of hope and behind the boys 100% .. but i also feel we’ve left it a bit late for this season and events elsewhere may very well end our hopes for this season..i hope i’m wrong though as the plymouth game will be awesome if we still have something to play for.
totally agree with you on young kightly..there’s a big future ahead for the lad and i hope it’s as a wolves player for the long term. i’m gonna leave off with the mick out rants today..and hopefully we can talk football properly without the handbag hurling we often get.

Nathan, you really should be more positive – your comment ‘I was fully expecting to start writing my “where did it all go wrong” blog’ is darkly reminiscent of the infamous ‘you’ve let us down again’ banner… many of us fully expected the team to be in this position, still in the thick of it with a couple of games to go.
A couple of factual points:
1) Sadly you’re wrong that ‘whatever happens’ it will go down to the final day. If Palace win and we fail to win, it will all be over.
2) You fail to mention that Bristol City can still be caught – if they lose both of their games (or even draw one and lose one) we can catch them, and given their recent form and last two games, that’s entirely possible.
Here’s looking for a great game on Saturday – and a thunderous Molineux on May 4th, hopefully free from the mindless, idiotic, shameful booing of our own players. On that point, I think you understate it – you shouldn’t just ‘not be a big fan’ of it, you should be entirely against it. It’s deeply, deeply shameful…

We can only dream of where we would have been if both kites & jarvis had been fit all season, which is why i make my next point, as a club we are ready for the prem but as a team we are not. i for one do not want to see us get hammered every week if we go up, i feel we will if we go up this season.i believe one more season in championship wont do us any harm if we can keep players fit, need two centre halves and another 20 goal a season striker to play along side seb (maybe Freddy could be that man if he stays and knuckles down) with keogh playing just behind. so good luck for the weekend me babies and lets stick 3 more past coventry on saturday.AS THE WOLVES GO MARCHING ON

Another Good blog nathan, I agree Coventry are a poor side however dont forget Coleman wasnt happy with the Wolves about eastwood so I believe the Coventry lads will be really pumped up tomorrow. I have critisised albion in recent weeks for not moving the ball quick enough and I think at times on tuesday we were guilty of this. Tomorrow the plan must be get it wide quick, we have to play to our strengths! I know its not going to happen but if eastwood would start instead of keogh what a front 4 we would have!!!!!!!!!!

Really looking forward to tomorrow now, lots of twists and turns cans till happen and probably will, just hope we win our two games and the others slip up!
I did have a chuckle as well when we booed Darren Purse and cheered Oaks, that was funny.
The boos were 50% aimed at Collins 50% at MM. The bloke behind me (in the south bank) who I had never seen before, must have been his first game of the season started shouting w%^ker w%^ker at Collins so I know a lot was directed at collins.

10 – Yes, Elliott and Collins have been dire but as soon as they cross that white line in the old gold and black we need to give them our 100% backing. Booing is getting us knowhere.
I’ve decided to not go to Coventry tomorrow because I’ve been away five times this season and I’ve yet to see us score. 0-0 at Stoke, West Brom, QPR and Bristol City, and losing 2-0 at Cardiff in the FA Cup. I think it’s best if I stay away. Superstitous? You bet.

To have Kites with Jarvis, would scare any defence in this league and a lot in the top flight. They are that good.
Now Breen is back in place of Collins – Ipswich free kick aside – the centre looks better. The weakest link is now central midfield!

could we keep kites if we don’t go up..i would imagine so if the lad wants to stay. and i see no reason at the moment to suggest he may want to move. from the clubs point of view, kites is more valuable for a promotion challenge next season (if we miss out) than from the money aspect. steve morgan seems prepared to invest in new signings in the summer, so selling kites (or anyone else) would do more harm than good to next seasons prospects.
it’s obvious eastwood will go for a proffit, but having absolutely no faith in mcarthy what so ever..no i wouldn’t trust him as far as i could throw him. last season he built an awesome young squad with huge potential..but this season he systematically dismantled it and subsequently failed to get us anywhere near the position we should be in. his man management is awful, and his attitude towards the fans is diabolical. but only steve morgan can rectify that situation.

At present they are three points ahead of you,
and with a similar goal difference,
as i have said previously they are wobbling worse than a tee-totaler that has just consumed
12 pints of Stella.

Good point wbabomber. The ambition of the club will be well and truly displayed if we sell our best players. Also, the wages offered by top flight clubs will be well in excess of what the players get paid at Wolves (note ‘get paid, not ‘earned’)and their agents will be keen to get them moved on. Interesting times! And good luck you lot, but can you wait till Monday please cos we need Hull to beat Palace!

24&25 – But Palace holding Hull will mean that they’ll win automatic promotion if they beat Southampton on Saturday. It’ll obviously ruin our chances but he’s more concerned about his own team, and so would I be if I was in his position.
We want Hull to win, not because it stops West Brom from being promoted but because, hopefully, we can leapfrog Palace.
I think the fact that he’s named three Wolves players in his Championship XI (minus West Brom players) shows that he’s not being petty.
I think you need a long hard look in the mirror.

I’ve been quiet of late due to an holiday & another stay in the NHS’s finest,coupled to peeps using my nickname & posting crud!
In my hopes and dreams,I can still see Wolves in the Prem next season,though wish we had played Cov back in September/October when Dowie was in charge.
Tomorrow’s game will be tough & Wolves still have to rely on other results.
Hopefully (hospital appointments/operations permitting)I’ll get to see Wolves clinch promotion at the New Wembley.

Nathan sorry but I didnt think Kites had a particular brilliant game on tuesday. The booing of the subs wasnt the best but to be honest I think it is borne out of frustration as fans do have an opinion in McCarthy and the Freddie saga. Seriously Nathan answer me this. If you spend £1.5M on a striker you would want to play him. Regardless if he puts in a shift or not you want him to get value for money out of the guy. If he played 30 odd games and scored 5 then yes fans would have a right to say what a waste of money, he aint no good. But I think given the fact that he has relied on elliott, AK, S. Ward and JB to bang in the goals at the start of the season and their return has been woefully inadequate you can understand the frustration of a £1.5M striker kicking his heels on the bench or in the stand.

To all those who booed Collins and Elliott, what do you do when they put the ball in the back of the net because I can count 9 occasions this season where they have done just that!
Groaning when they give the ball away is one thing but booing a substitution (when we’re winning) is totally unacceptable. I’m not they’re biggest fans but you have to get behind them, especially at this time in the season.

Thanks for the mention Nathan. As like all Wolves supporters around the world we try to do our best to keep the Gold and Black flag flying in Malta.
I think that if Michael Kightly and Matthew Jarvis weren`t injured Wolves could have been in a better position, with a Top 6 finish already cemented. But these things happen in football.
Regarding tomorrow`s match I think Wolves should beat the Sky Blues as it was the 5-1 beating of Colchester last week that rescued them from a more precarious position. And remember they got two penalties in the game something that referees are not that much keen to award Wolves.
But with Andy Keogh and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake gelling in attack they may be too much for the opposing defence.
So come on Wolves give all you`ve got to give Wolves fans around the world especially with 5,000 fans present at the Ricoh.

Nathan, you are missing the bigger picture, why do you think that your Season only rests on Palace not winning on Saturday. If results go your way then you can catch Watford and Bristol besides Palace. Yor glass should be half full and not half empty, other Wolves supporters can see this so why can’t you. Having a crack at wbabomber when if you had have been in the same boat would no doubt have had a similar blog. Ideally the true Blackcountry football supporter would want both teams promoted since a Premier Black Country derby would be awesome.

Nathan – surely if you can still catch watford as bomber suggested then the palace result is irrelevent… there is a chance for both wolves AND Palace to make the play offs if watford slip up, so bomber hoping for that to happen seems fair to me.
Some of you guys have spent that long at each others throats (let alone ours) that you can longer see a reasoned comment when its made.
Personally i am in two minds – I want wolves to do well because i would love to see our game played in the prem, and there are also plenty of posters on here who deserve to enjoy some success…. however there are a large % of posters for whom I will shed no tears should wolves fail again, and in fact i will enjoy reminding them of it when possible – and yes, that does make me shallow.

Sorry that the blog wasn’t exactly cutting edge. I ran out of time yesterday and it had to be a little rushed. Hopefully with a win at the Ricoh on Saturday I can put a bit more ooomph and passion into the next one.
I stand by my comments about Kites though. He may not have been at his absolute best, but I thought he was superb none the less.

Happy – the fact you can say your in two minds is fine by me and I can understand both points!
I can fully understand and appreciate a reasoned comment but a blog with the title “Come on palace” is not a reasoned argument/discussion!
If like you say, Bomber came out and said, “you know what, im not fussed about the wolves, I just want albion to go up” then i would say fair play to that article, but when he says he wants wolves to go up knowing that a Palace win will effectively (not definitely) ruin our playoff hopes is hypercritical in my eyes!
Yes there is a chance for wolves and palace to make the playoffs but looking very unlikely to be fair.
Bomber, can’t remember calling you an idiot, if I did I apologise (you seem like a good bloke deep down), i stand by the other 2 comments though!

If you read my blog again it says i hope Palace get a result (i did not say win), i have said all week that a draw would suit us, me and the Wolves, if Wolves can win their last two games, Palace then go to Ipswich (best home record in the division) last game of the season.
I do not want to drag out a rather irrelevant point, but i do not want to be labelled a hypocrite unfairly either.

Not sure if we will get anything tomorrow in cov. My prediction is that we draw tomorrow, Watford lose and Palace win and then we will need to beat Plymouth on the last day by more than 4 goals and Watford will need to lose for us to grab that sixth spot.

I think you should have thought a little bit more carefully about what you were expressing. I can see by the abuse that other posters have given you, that I wasn’t the only person who thought your views were a little off the mark.
And why attack me as well? Just because it is the first time I’ve posted, that doesn’t mean I am going to my first game does it? Do you intentionally wind people up or is it a gift?
For your information, my first game was Ipswich at home in 1991 standing in the South Bank and I’ve had a season ticket in the Steve Bull for around 12 years.
Anyway, enjoy the match tomorrow and hopefully we can lock swords again on here in the future.

So Banghrai, did you not see any of my point or are you blinded by your love affair with the albion blogger?
I don’t think i gave him “abuse”, merely stated my opinion. No-one has given me “abuse”, some may have disagreed with my comment but I haven’t dished out abuse nor recieved it.
I also think all of my posts have been backed up with reasoned arguments 15,24,28,52.
As for winding people up, i do not posses that gift, think it’s just because your a bit sensitive mate!

Nathan, this isn’t really getting us anywhere is it? I think telling someone to shove their comments is fairly abusive, don’t you think?
Well done for picking out the blogs that you think backed you up. But come out with another childish statement…. “are you blinded by your love affair with the albion blogger?”
Sometimes you have to admit you were in the wrong and I think telling the Albion blogger to shove his comments wasn’t the nicest thing to do.

Dear me. I see NathanWolves has wound someone else up. How dare Jarrod come across to the Wolves page with his views eh? I love reading both blogs and if Jarrod geniunely wants the wolves to join albion up in the big league then fair play to him.
He doesn’t need someone telling me to bugger off though does he nathan?
Anyway, back to footballing stuff. Coventry will be difficult tomorrow, but I think we will stuff em 3-0, and again it will be a goal apiece for blakes, Kightly and Andy Keogh.
I can’t make it I’m working, but I’ll have the radio on, bricking it.

Nathan, we are hardly in the thick of it but more like grasping it by the skin of our teeth. It may not have been pleasant to hear the crowd’s reaction to the introduction of Elliott and Collins but between them they have epitamised our downfall for large parts of the season what with Elliott’s sitters and Collins’s penalty sales. What they have done for Wolves positively is hugely outweighed by their disasters. I don’t applaud the booers in any way but can understand that some passionate fans cannot help let their feelings be known. I do feel sorry for these players because they are out of their depth here at Molineux, I do however blame the manager for thinking that they would be the ones to take us to the next level. How much wronger could he have been, good job Darren Ward was not playing otherwise he too would have had the same treatment. As for Stephen Ward, his appearance was overcome with the appreciation for SEB. Things might have been different if we were only 1 up, level or chasing the game

As commented elswere were we at the same game. Kite was mearly warming up and heaven knows what Olofinjana and the rest of midfield were doing. cardiff were not at the races but still look technically more cabable than Wolves and must still be wondering just how the lost so comprehensively.
I hope we can up our game today and confound the critics but a play off place still look sot be a long shot.
