Eight arrested in metal theft blitz

Friday 25th April 2008, 11:44AM BST.

At least eight people were arrested in the Black Country as part of an international blitz on the metal theft epidemic which is costing the region millions.

Seven men and a woman were held on suspicion of fraud and two cars were seized in Brierley Hill.

In Wolverhampton, undercover officers worked with trading standards officials to check that scrapyards in the city were following procedures when they bought metal.

It was part of a Europe-wide day of action by police across the continent to tackle the problem.

Thieves have been stripping lead from churches, schools and businesses before selling it on to unscrupulous scrapyards for big profits, fuelled by construction booms in the Far East.

More than 680 people have been arrested under Operation Steel, which was launched last August by West Midlands police, to tackle the problem.

The eight people held in Brierley Hill were arrested in the Two Woods Lane area and they are now being dealt with by the Department for Work and Pensions.

Supt Laurie Dyer, who is running Operation Steel, said: “This day of action has seen the work of West Midlands Police, British Transport Police and other forces nationwide taken onto the continent to bring about a co-ordinated approach to the theft of metal.

“Operation Steel has made some headway in the fight against high value metal theft.

“But there is still work to be done to stop the illegal acquisition and sale of these materials.”

Great news some of these scum are caught. Lets hope they get some tough sentencing.

When are the authorities going to get some sense and make these scrap dealers NOT to pay cash in the hand.

lets hope the courts throw the book at this SCUM,they have not only stole off companies but put innocent people’s job’s on the line or worse out of work, and let’s face it how LOW can you really get to steel off a church or graves!

    Good-afternoon!
Surely scrap-metal dealers must be aware of
what is going on.They read the papers too,I
imagine?Wouldn,t it be possible to show proof
of where the metal has come from?If a place is
to be demolished, the county borough ought to
give a written permission of sorts BEFORE work
starts, complete with address where it came from!If the scrap dealer cannot detect where
the scrap came from, the police are called in
    to investigate.

Some excellent ideas are given here to curb this practice. It is a great pity the people in contol will not take heed and the courts will hand out pathetic punishments so wasting everyones time.

scrap-metal dealers must pay by cheque then the people who are taking scrap to the dealers can pay tax and proof of where the metal has come from

3 (Bartling) – Yes, reputable scrap dealers do know where the metal comes from, or they refuse to buy sourceless material. There are a few honest companies around – one local guy got a shock when ten cops turned up after just one knocked on the door! He was more than happy to hand over his log books, ‘cos he knew that he hadn’t done anything wrong. There are honest people around – this is meant to catch the bad ‘uns – and with any luck, it will!
