Blind Dave on his way home

Wednesday 16th April 2008, 11:31AM BST.

Dave HeeleyTriumphant marathon man Dave Heeley was returning to a hero’s welcome in his home town of West Bromwich this afternoon.

Following the record-breaking feat of completing seven marathons in seven days on seven continents, Blind Dave and his guide Mac Carr travelled by train from Euston this morning.

They were being greeted by Sandwell mayor Gurcharan Singh Sidhu at Sandwell and Dudley railway station before embarking on an open top bus tour around the town.

Speaking on the train back to Sandwell, Dave, aged 50, said: “I feel very proud and privileged and it was a surprise to have the open top bus arranged.

“What they are doing for us is absolutely incredible.

“For me it will be a memory that will live with me for the rest of my life.”

Mac, aged 44, from Great Bridge, added: “I can’t wait for the bus tour.”

What a remarkable journey they have made. Just a shame about the open top tour of the town. I would have thought Sandwell would have made more of an effort by either make it more know at what time the tour would have taken place, also I would have thought more people would have made the effort to welcome them back home if this tour was to have taken place over the weekend and finished with an banquite in the park. Entrance fees could have also be donated to the charity and I am sure more would have attended.
Well done though Dave and Mac.
