Motorists faced delays on Wolverhampton’s Penn Road today after a car smashed through a central reservation.

The accident, which happened on the A449 road near its junction with Spring Hill Lane, left the VW Bora wrapped up in a metal barrier.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the car clip the kerb before crashing through a small fence on the central reservation and coming to rest on the opposite side of the road.

West Midlands Ambulance Service received a number of calls from members of the public who witnessed the smash at 7.40am. But the driver of the car escaped without suffering any serious injuries.

Cars using the Penn Road to get into Wolverhampton were being diverted into a service road outside a row of shops so they could get round the accident scene. Queues stretched beyond the Lloyds Road island towards Wombourne.

Jonathan Stevens, aged 26, from Smestow, was forced to divert through Merridale and Finchfield to avoid the traffic.

“We had no idea what was causing it,” he said.

“It was all the way back to the island and didn’t look as though it was moving. “I had to go all the way around through Finchfield to drop my girlfriend into Wolverhampton because I didn’t want to risk getting stuck in it.

“I came back along the Penn Road and saw a car had smashed into the railings.”

The accident was one of a number in the region in the last 24 hours. Last night motorists using the busy Black Country route in Willenhall faced delays after a crash involving a Transit van and a lorry.

Long tailbacks were created as drivers heading for Junction 10 of the M6 were re-directed towards Bilston Lane and Wolverhampton Road.
