Marathon man Dave Heeley was moved to tears as he completed the third leg of his Seven Magnificent Marathons challenge in Los Angeles.

The West Bromwich runner, known as Blind Dave, and his sighted running guide Malcolm Carr successfully tackled the 26.2 mile course around the world-famous Rose Bowl stadium last night, completing it in 4hrs 35mins.

The race got off to an emotional start with 50-year-old Dave shedding a tear at the support he received from The Braille Institute of America, which organised the North American run, and the Mayor of Pasadena Bill Bogaard who presented the runner with a special commendation.

The mayor delivered a moving speech hailing the inspirational efforts of Blind Dave. He told the crowd: “Dave Heeley’s Seven Magnificent Marathons challenge has inspired and encouraged people across the world to reach for their dreams.

“The success of Seven Magnificent Marathons will not be measured by how many miles run, but by the courage necessary to undertake such a challenge. Such courage, in the face of adversity, will be an inspiration for years to come.” The pair arrived in Los Angeles on day two of the challenge having already completed marathons in Falkland Islands and Rio de Janeiro. They are now undertaking a gruelling journey to Australia.

Blind Dave has also been receiving plenty of support back home, with his three beloved daughters and their friends doing their bit to support his efforts.

Dave Heeley’s youngest daughters Dannie, aged four, and Georgie Lee, six, both attend Guns Village Primary School, where their fellow pupils have been tracking Dave’s progress.

The girls and Dave’s eldest daughter Grace, 17, took in their dad’s guide dog Wicksie to show pupils at the school.

The pupils will also be getting their own running shoes on tomorrow as they tackle their own mini-marathon.
