Robbo tips Phillips to keep going

Tuesday 8th April 2008, 2:48PM BST.

72395albion-12-dh-5.jpgAlbion hardman Paul Robinson today claimed leading scorer Kevin Phillips could be a hit in the Premier League for another three years if the Baggies win promotion.

Robinson believes 34-year-old Phillips is in good enough shape to extend his Indian summer into the top flight if their team clinch a return to the top flight.

Phillips saw possibly his last chance to play in an FA Cup final slip away on Saturday but Robinson says fans should not be too quick to write off the former England man – or veteran goalkeeper Dean Kiely.

“Saturday was hard on people like Kevin Phillips but he’s still a quality player,” said Robinson.

“Kev can still go on for two or three years. He’s proved he can still score goals at the highest level and there’s no doubt in my mind when we get promoted he will go on again and score goals.

“As for Dean Kiely, goalkeepers can go on for as long as they want, until they say enough’s enough.

“Both players will be disappointed (about Saturday), but they still have their heads held high.”

The Baggies return to action for the first time since their Wembley semi-final defeat to Portsmouth when they travel to Blackpool in the Championship.

And Robinson reckons Saturday’s loss to Pompey could act as a motivating factor for the Baggies.

“We’ve got one clear goal for this season and that’s to get promoted and we’re fully concentrated on the Blackpool game,” said Robinson.

“These games spur you on as a group of players. We challenged a quality Portsmouth side and we feel we gave them a good game, so why should we be downhearted?

“We should go into the League games now with confidence, but we’re not over-confident. We’ve still got a job to do but we’re confident we can do that job.

“It’s not a problem for us going to Blackpool – we’re professional about our jobs. Our only concern is picking up three points.”

Phillips is a class player 20 goals this season in the championship. We should sign him up for another 2 years then sign him as a coach. As for Kiely think this will be is last season with us.

    Team for tonight

    Danek

    Hoefkens
    Clement
    Alby

    Gera

Rich (1). There is no way he will drop Kiely, Danek will get his chance next season, at the moment his english is not the best a bit like the dingles who comment on this page. Tonight is not going to be easy, simple we need to win the next 6 games and we are up. COME ON YOU BAGGIE BOYS

Well I came over from Canada for Saturdays game, I thought the first half was some of the best football I’ve seen from the baggies. If we do go up we will need to buy another quality striker. I thought when Nugent came on he caused more problems than Kanu and the cheating git put together. Maybe he could be an answer, with the keeper Kiely is OK but we should have a look at bringing Luke Steele as he has proved he’s up for big games. I don’t know about you but I’d be happy with a point tonight, and I’d rest super Kev…

3 more years in the Prem? Don’t make me laugh he’s already slowing up now I think your getting carried away with this as the championship suites him more because generally the defenses are slower and overall poor. He’s had his day in the top flight. You would need the likes of Ronaldo or Fabregas laying it on plate for him and there ain’t no one close to that at the Albion. Robbo are you trying to convince yourselves that your still going up as you aren’t convincing me. The only thing that’s convincing me is that Stoke,Bristol and Watford are just as bad as the Albion. Hull are the better team in that top 6 at the moment and actually play the better style of fottball for the Prem.

Southern Wolves I agree, simply replacing the word ‘when’ with ‘if’ would make Robinson look a lot less complacent.

I really hope we’re not complacent tonight or we could easily be beaten.

I hope you win tonight and go on to gain automatic promotion. That would clear the way for us to join you via the play offs. Imagine it, the Black Country Derby played in the Premiership? The Blues and that club from Aston have had it their own way for too long. Saying that I hope Mr Phillips has on off day on the 15th as the little man always seems to score against us! Keep the faith, the Black country is alive and kicking again!

I dont think so, just a dirty player. All this talk of him having Kightly in his pocket. He went through him at molineux last season and should have been sent off, then done him at the hawthorns and he is still out of action now. Muscat was a hard man. Muscat v Robinson – No contest

C’mon baggies!!! A win tonight and we are on the way. Bubbles have burst in Bristol and Stoke. In the next seven days you will hear the popping of more bubbles in Watford and Hull as even their good run halts. The collapse of these sides may even allow Wolves in but, their run looks to have gone on too long as well. Let the dogs fight it out in the playoffs whilst we watch from where we belong. The premiership!

‘Albion hardman Paul Robinson’? Define hardman in football – someone who doesn’t dive on the floor screaming like a 3 year old when they can’t have an icecream? There is no such thing as a ‘hardman’ in football. Compared to rugby players they are just ill disciplined mummys boys.

Always been a Phillips fan. If you went up he would still be useful coming on late in games. Pure class! Hard luck against Pompey but that’s football and the really important stuff will be occurring over the next few weeks. Hope we can both make it, but it could be any of the teams from the top eight.

Big game for you guys tonight. Would be interested in your thoughts on Hard Man Robinson. Not sure how obvious it would have been at Wembley but if you see it on TV it was the biggest dive since Ronaldo last played, or next plays. That stuff belongs in the Prem not in proper football.

To be honest i think the strain of the championship and a good FA cup run will be too much for this old man. I think SEB will probably pip him for the top GS. Still, you have the one foot wonder? God help KP if you don’t get automatic promotion. Bit of bitterness in there but TBH i would like to see an Albion V Wolves play off final. Regardless of who wins. (God, did i just say that):)

Well, the albion team is certainly not misfiring. We bag-ied another 3 points last night, not by playing thrilling, cultured footi, like we have all season-BUT, by winning ugly.
Now thats a first for this set of players; can anyone reflect on the number of times arsenal, man u and the like, have turned a match round in the last ten mins ? answer, dozens. We played out of sorts for 80 mins, but we still trooped it in the last 10–now that is what i call arrival at the class of renowned table toppers, year on year, like the top 4 in the prem.
And super kev; I am going to start a petition for him to get 2 to 3 years. Shef wed he scored in the 3rd min of injury time. Last night he scored twice for the 3 points. His contribution is going to earn the fat cats on the board millions in their share dividends when we are in the prem. Does that not give him the right to have half a million to £750k back in return for earning the directors all those millions……

Good to see you on here. I haven’t seen a replay of the Robbo ‘dive’ but there’s an old saying ‘when in Rome etc.’ It’s been pointed out that Baros seemed to be playing netball throughout the game and despite him being booked for it, neither the ref or linesman seemed to notice the one for the goal. Anyway I don’t want to bring that up, it’s water under the bridge and in a way I’m glad that we can now concentrate on the important business.
On the subject of ‘hard man’ Muscat. I still remember the third eye on Soccer AM showing him trying to throw sand at the free kick taker when he was in a defensive wall. I don’t knock Wolves players for the sake of it but I thought he was a horrible, nasty piece of work before he ever joined you.
No 12. Don’t want to get involved in who’s the hardest/dirtiest debate but I think you’ll find that Michael Kightly will tell you that Robbo didn’t either foul him or injure him at the Hawthorns.

nobody else noticed the handball either until the replays and only one of your defenders appealed at the time and perhaps he should have played to the whistle instead of running towards the ref.
yes it was handball but plain and simple the ref didn’t see it. and Kevin Phillips definitely didn’t see it.
and as for Muscat yes he dished it out but at least he could take it aswell someone only has to look at Mrs Robinson and she starts crying or does a dive like at wembley.
