Members of an historic Wolverhampton cricket club are pitching in to spruce up a rundown ground as part of centenery celebrations.

Up to 100 volunteers from Penn Cricket Club will bring their new ground back to its former glory. The worn-out pavilion will be repainted and a derelict air raid shelter may be removed. 

The club, which is based in Mount Road, Penn, took over the lease of the Gamesfield Green pitch in Merridale Road last September.

Fences will be put up and recycling bins and bird boxes will also be installed during the overhaul this weekend. Cricket coach Kevin Drew said: “The ground is in need of some tender loving care and could be the most beautiful ground.”

Mr Drew said the pitch had been used by adult players since the club took over the lease last year but it was hoped youth teams would be able to benefit.

The club is also applying for funding to create changing rooms.
