Kidderminster Cricket Club’s historic pavilion, which dates back more than 135 years, has been destroyed in an arson attack.
The Old Pavilion at the club in Chester Road North was engulfed in the early hours of Sunday sending decades of cricket history up in smoke.
The remains of the wooden building, once used by cricket legend WG Grace, has now had to be demolished for health and safety reasons, because it was threatening to tumble into Offmore Lane.
The two-storey pavilion was moved to the Chester Road North site in 1870 from the previous ground at the junction of Lorne Street and Villers Street. Officials at the club say it probably pre-dated that by some years, but there was little history about the club in its early days. However, it is known WG Grace once changed in it – a popular talking point among members.
Secretary Mr Dave Clamp, said:”It is a very sad day for the members.”
Police confirmed they are treating the fire as arson. Witnesses can call on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
