Albion boss backs team to go up
Monday 7th April 2008, 2:31PM BST.
Albion boss Tony Mowbray urged his downhearted players to continue chasing their “pot of gold” and backed them to break their hoodoo at the new Wembley.
Mowbray knows his team could return to Wembley for the third time in a year if they miss out on automatic promotion and are forced back into the play-offs.
And Mowbray insisted he would relish a return despite seeing his side beaten 1-0 at the national stadium by both Derby in last year’s play-offs and Portsmouth on Saturday.
“If it’s the play-offs, it’s the play-offs,” said a philosophical Mowbray.
“It’s a very tough league we’re in and there are a lot of teams up there scrapping to get into the top two. If we win our game in hand we will go top of the table.
“We’ve got some tough, tough games to come.
“We’re away at Blackpool on Tuesday, then Watford before we’re away at our rivals Wolves the following Tuesday.
“The games are just coming thick and fast and it’s one every three days from now on in.
“Let’s hope there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for us this year.
“We’ll be back at Wembley one day and, if it’s this year, hopefully it will be third time lucky.
“But let’s hope we don’t come back here this year.
“I was more disappointed with the result rather than the way our team played.
“Our team can play like that most weeks because that’s the way we play football.
“The disappointment is that we didn’t win the game and that a team that scored so many goals this season didn’t threaten their goal enough.”
Mowbray, meanwhile, backed his side to deal quickly with Saturday’s disappointment and bounce back strongly in the Championship, starting at Blackpool tomorrow night.
“It was important to come out of the game with a belief and confidence,” he said.
“It would have been very disappointing to have come out of it having not performed and been beaten comfortably and having to pick the players up for the last six league games.
“The message coming loud out of the dressing room is that we’re ready.
“We have six games to go and let’s earn the right to go and play the likes of Portsmouth week in, week out.”
And Mowbray refused to point the finger of blame at referee Howard Webb, despite the Baggies’ disappointment at Milan Baros’s handball in the build-up to Nwankwo Kanu’s winner.
“Milan Baros had a few sneaky handballs and got booked for one,” said Mowbray.
“Whether he did for the goal or not I don’t know. It’s no good me sitting here and complaining about a handball because it’s a goal.
“There’s nothing we can do about that. Good luck to Portsmouth in the final because they haven’t been there for a long time and we wish them all the best.
“They’ll be up against a Championship team who I’m sure will acquit themselves very well on the day.
“We’ll get on with our league programme. The players are very disappointed.
“They felt they applied themselves well to the game. You hope to come to these games and play well but obviously you come to win.”

The Megson way is a complete contrast to the Mowbray way. I can understand the argument to a degree, and Megson’s way is far more effective in this league, which is why Bristol City and Stoke are utilising their resources a little better than we probably are.
BUT, Tony Mowbray’s brief as manager is to get this club into the Premiership again and giving us a chance to survive there.
If we were to somehow revert back to the Megson way, we may well battle to another promotion, but we’ll not stand a chance in the Premiership, as has been proved by every club that’s gone up and played that way, and we’ll have not progressed anywhere in 6 or 7 seasons.
This team can survive in the Premiership. Instead of moaning and knocking what was a gallant performance against a very good side, lets get behind them for 6 of the most important games in the club’s history.
To the bitter Wolves posts on here, get a grip, you make yourselves look silly by devoting so much time to us.

Trying to get Saturday in proportion. We lost a fairly even game by the odd goal. If we’d have scored we would probably have won. This was against the sixth best team in the Premier League. If we go up is there a lot to be frightened of? Judging on this the answer is no.
Tony is right not to take automatic for granted but it is still in our own hands, how many teams would settle for that? The mad results once teams get to the top IE Bristol City on Saturday make it a lottery but if our players can keep going and we avoid too many injuries we can do it.
By the way. Is the Prem as good as everyone says it is and is the Championship as bad? Considering this seasons cup results. What do others think?

The real Bully.
I dont think this league is any good.
Your lot are by far the best attacking team(unfortunately for you defending is also important) but you didnt muster up a single shot on target. Portsmouth probably havent played much worse than they did in the 1st half yet still didnt concede.

Facts are proving that you are bottling it.
on saturday it reminded me of when Twaddle was at Molineux.
playing the opposition off the park but nothing in the final third.
you need to battle your way out of this division and if you think your current squad would survive in the prem you are not very bright you would need to buy an awfull lot of players. yes you did outplay portsmouth but just a couple of points,
1. Pompey played well under par.
2. who won.
3. Barnsley beat Liverpool and Chelsea so how good a team would they be in the prem.
fact is you played one prem team and lost and before you all go on about Wolves yes we failed in the cup but we also went out to a team who are in the final.

Things to look forward to in the close season:
1. WBA promotion automatically or via play-offs
2. Wolves promotion via play-offs (and stretching it automatically..)
3. Derby on 15th April
4. Our best player returning from injury in time for the play-offs to link up with SEB, Keogh and Jarvis to dump the other teams the way we did in 2003.

If we beat Blackpool and go top tomorrow, what will you say then? It says a lot about how rubbish Wolves are when the HIGHLIGHT of your season is US getting to Wembley. LMAO at Wolves losers.

oh yes lets look at the facts shall we michael.we win our game in hand to go into an automatic promotion place,we beat you next week to put you out of the playoff race, and you go back to your own sad little dingle message board to discuss how it all went wrong.bye bye michael.

8 Southern.
I know what you’re saying but I don’t think you give the Pompey defence enough credit. They have the next England right back. An ex England CH who’s not only got the T-shirt but probably designed it and despite what we all say about him the best keeper in England. The other two ain’t bad either. The goal which should have been disallowed could just as easily have gone our way and we’d be in Europe next season. Not complaining though, as the Stones said ‘you can’t always get what you want.’ But if we get up I hope we can prove a few doubters wrong.
PS. Baggies fans. Typical quiet efficient game by Clem. He’s brought such a steadying influence to our much maligned defence.

Before you harp on about attendances, check which of us has the highest record attendances, and have a think about Bury at home in 1986.

20. Just sent an email to Jez Moxey requesting that he considers raising the admission prices by a tenner because Wolves fans like EdWolf on the E&S message board consider themselves to be a much bigger club than West Bromwich Albion. Firstly I would like to apologise for all rubbish posted on this site by my fellow Wolves fans! I have no doubt in my mind that Albion will achieve automatic promotion because they have the best team in this division and deserve to be promoted on merit. Hopefully we can follow in your footsteps and win promotion via the playoffs it would be great to go back to the days of Wolves, Albion, Birmingham & Villa all competing in the same league. Good luck for the rest of the season but I hope we stuff you at Molineux

As a wolves fan who went to watch you on saturday i hope I can give you a honest assesment. You did keep the ball very well and your passing and movement was fantastic in the first half especially, but it wal all to slow and in the wrong areas of the pitch. You were great up until the final third where there was no penetration. When miller came on you looked forward earlier and although he is as one footed as paul cook was you looked more potent. I think if you had got the ball quicker earlier in the first half Portsmouth would have struggled. Mowbray should also have switched widemen as both brunt and morrison struggled against the impressive Johnson. It was a good game and as a team your not far away, but remember Keily had about 4 saves to make and james had one. If defoe had been playing it might have been more as Baros the cheat was aweful. I do hope you go up automatic but lose to us next week.

Thanks for introducing a sense of sanity to counter some of the comments from your fellow Wolves supporters.
I really cannot understand the ‘twisted’ logic from some of them.
Why they have to comment on any Albion article is beyond me.
Ihave never commented on any Wolves articles because for the simple reason THAT should be left to Wolves supporters…shouldn’t it?
Good natured banter i can accept BUT some of the ‘rubbish’ (not my words remember) is just that.
Let both sets of sipporters worry about their own teams and not belittle every article published simply because it’s seen as being ‘clever’.
The same applies to Albion fans don’t hurry to your PC every day to discover a story that cooncerning Wolves.
What’s the point? “Were’e bigger than you” “We’re better than you”..NA-Na Na Na Na.
Let both sets of supporters acknowlege the fact that both teams have talented players, plus some not so good (!) that way the seemingly inborn feeling of jealousy, bordered on ‘hatred’ could be avoided.
I now await comments from those who enjoy nothing better than slagging off the team they DON’T support!

Oh what great role models you all are to the next generation. There’s always going to be friction between the two teams because the Dingles are always going to revert to mindless sarcasm and think it’s wit. They don’t have the intelligence to have an intellectual arguement and the people who keep answering them are just stooping to their level – in the gutter. Ignore them and maybe they’ll go away. In a way I can understand a lot of the wolves comments on here. Wouldn’t YOU be bitter if your local rivals have been consistently better than you since the turn of the millenium? Think about this – the majority of kids now in Black Country primary schools have NEVER known Wolves to have a team anywhere near as good as the Baggies. Think about what it must be like to keep trying to convince your increasingly confused son that the team you keep calling all the names under the sun are so inferior to your beloved Wolves despite all the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Soul destroying. So yeah, I think I’d be bitter too if my teams biggest rivals kept putting us in the shadows with higher place finishes, scinitlating football and considerably more success in the local derbies. Fortunately my teams biggest rivals are Wolves so it hasn’t been an issue for nigh on ten years! Boing Boing!

Reason our fans were so quiet was distance. We were down the other end from you, believe it or not our fans sounded much louder to me. Let me explain, did you notice the players down the other end looked smaller than the ones at your end. Perspective, smaller, further away. Try it in the pub, listen to the bloke next to you then try to hear someone on the other side of the room. Who said bumkins are thick.
PS. Grow up and don’t think that you have to try to put the other team down to praise your own. Both teams played well and cancelled each other out. You got lucky with a dodgy decision, that’s life, get over it.
