Wanted: Caring dogs willing to donate blood to help pooches in need in the Black Country.

A unique life-saving blood bank for dogs is heading to the region, and willing volunteers are being asked to come forward. Pet Blood Bank Uk is the first national service of its kind, and will be visiting Cradley Heath on April 19 to collect blood for poorly pooches. Just like the one for humans, it collects, processes, stores and supplies pet blood products. It will mean dogs will have access to blood needed for lifesaving treatments.

The donor session will be taking place at Manor Vets in Graingers Lane from midday.

Pet Blood Bank executive director Wendy Barnett said this first round of collection sessions marked a significant advancement in veterinary care in the UK.

“This exciting new initiative will help to save the lives of dogs across the whole country,” she said.

“One donation can help to save as many as four dogs and virtually all larger types of dog can donate.

“We are coming to Cradley Heath on April 19 and I really hope dog owners there will lend us their support and bring their pets along to donate blood,” she added.

The animals must be between one and eight years old and should be in good health, weighing over 25kg.

All pets taking part must also have up to date vaccinations, never received a blood transfusion and have never travelled abroad.

Dogs can donate up to four times a year, with the process taking about 10 minutes.

All pet owners must book an appointment in advance and it is recommended to allow for spending half an hour at the blood bank.

On arrival dogs get a physical exam and have a small area of fur clipped for the blood can be taken.

The generous pooches are then rewarded with a drink and a biscuit.

Donated blood is used in transfusions by vets carrying out surgery or treating major traumas and disease.
