Albion anger over Kanu goal

Saturday 5th April 2008, 6:15PM BST.

kanu2.jpgBaggies star Kevin Phillips tonight accused referee Howard Webb of ‘bottling’ a decision to disallow the goal scored by former Albion player Nwankwo Kanu.

Albion are convinced Milan Baros, Kanu’s strike partner, controlled the ball with the top of his arm in the build-up to the winner.

An angry Phillips said: “Referee’s do tend to bottle decisions like that in the big games. There is no doubt about it – Portsmouth were very lucky to win.

“I am gutted. We didn’t deserve to lose. Everybody who saw us play knows we are a good side. I don’t think they deserved to win.”

Kanu struck nine minutes into the second half to kill off Albion’s challenge and wreck hopes of marking the 40th anniversary of their 1968 cup victory with another trip to the final.

Baros had already been booked in the first half for two offences of deliberate hand ball in quick succession but Albion manager Tony Mowbray refused to blame the decision for his team’s defeat.

And the Baggies boss was full of praise for the efforts of his players, who had the better of the game until Kanu’s goal and rattled the Pompey crossbar late on through midfielder Robert Koren.

“I will have to look at the goal on TV tonight but I didn’t see a hand ball and I never reacted to it on the bench,’’ said an honest Mowbray.

“There were a few occasions where I thought Baros tried some cheeky hand balls and he actually got booked for it. But I won’t sit here complaining about a hand ball.

“Its a goal, it was given and I have no problems with it.

“Good luck to Portsmouth in the FA Cup final and I wish them well but they played against a Championship side who acquitted themselves very well on the day and made it very difficult for them.

“I am disappointed with the result but not with the way the team played.

“People who watch us every week know we can play like that. We play good football.

“The disappointment today was that for a team who score so many goals we didn’t threaten their goal enough.

“But it was important as we came out of the day with our belief and confidence intact and that we performed and didn’t get beaten comfortably.

“We’ve got six games left now and the message coming out of the dressing room is that we want to attack them and perform well week in, week out.

“This is a missed opportunity but on the balance of play and the balance of the chances there wasn’t a lot in the game.

“If Ishmael Miller had hit the target at the end or Robert Koren’s shot had gone under the bar rather than hitting it we could still have been playing extra time.

“It was a tight game but good luck to Portsmouth.”

And Mowbray backed his side to pick themselves up from today’s defeat and push on towards promotion.

They are back in action on Tuesday at Blackpool in the first of six huge Championship matches that will make or break their promotion campaign.

“We will be in training tomorrow and again on Monday morning and we will be at Blackpool on Tuesday night looking to get some points.”

as a fan who travelled to wembley despite the loss, this match shows what our mowbrays men are made of.
its difficult to say but after the loss but we can hold our heads high.
obviously we shown how we can perform, although conceding a tap-in goal pompey didn’t have any many oppurtunities to show their class.
great acheivement to get this far for us, and this can result in the push for promotion.
fair play to pompey to score an oppurtunity that shouldnt of been allowed and not deserved, but to be honest its the score and not the performance. :/

wolves fans who do come on here boasting about our loss, well thats pathetic at the end of the day. + fair play to those who do show loyality and see behond us as rivals.

You did not deserve to lose and you were cheated but I find it amazing that with possesion in the first half you hardly troubled James. I thought once you got one you would probably get four..

I think you should have put Millar on earlier because if nothing else, he troubles defences and unsettles them.

I’m sorry you lost and more soryy you lost that way. Kanu was useless the whole game and yet he gets the winner.

So I wish you a very bad day at Molineux but I hope you stuff the rest and go up in the top two. Tough luck lads. You deserved better.

Although disappointing, strangely enough I’m not too depressed about it. Lets face it, the cup was a bonus and a double would have been special, but we were playing a top half premiership team and outpassed them for large parts of the game. We need to take that good football but be more penetrating to be successful in the top flight. We still have a great season to complete, 2 games in hand which if we win them will take us to the top of the table and clear. I believe this result will galvanise the Baggies into doing just that.

Best Wishes to The Pompey netball team in the final!!(Baros did that 4 times as I counted)….Anyway a truely fantastic performance from the Albion in all but a result..We just mesmerised Pompey with our passing admittedly without creating the right type of goal chances the play merited. If Mowbrey’s “footballing” doctrine is allowed to flourish and the the very small adjustments are made next year then I can really see a new dawn of optimism sweeping around the Hawthorns…I’ve watched Albion teams ranging from Jimmy Hagan, Alan Ashman, John Giles, Big Ron & Ossie Ardilles and I’ve never witnessed such a range of quality through the team…Truely magnificent and on Saturday they were a great source of pride and a great credit to both West Bromwich Albion Football Club & the Black Country. Our time will come.

#77 Sad no not sad. The wolves fans are only doing what you lot would be doing if they were beaten in a cup semi final. All you lot do is moan. You believe you have a divine right to win win win and clearly that is not the case. Face it you lost and they are really happy because they are sick of you “boing boings” thinking you’re the mutts nuts.

As an Albion fan who moved to Leeds 6 years ago, it is nice and refreshing to see just how childish the Wolves fans still are, god i have missed all of this.
I never went to the game but watched it on the tv, i am proud of the lads and feel that it was our game, listening to the commentary and the afterthoughts of Shearer and Dixon in the studio, you would have thouhght that the Albion didnt do a thing, they didnt have a good wourd to say about us!!, we all know that the FA does not really want teams like ours in the cup and they would have been deverstated if there was not a Prem side in the final, just makes me wonder after the ref ignored the handball. anyway Well done lads lets just look at promotion :0)

Cmon lads lets be honest. I’m not on here to gloat,Albion done really well to get to the final.
For weeks now though people like Terry have been on the wolves stories telling us how your going to win the cup, league,UEFA etc.Its just a little payback. If your going to give it you have to be able to take it.

WBA played well, but if the most prolific CCC team struggle to score against what was on the day a poor Pompey team, it shows how hard it will be for any promoted team. Console yourselves with the thought of auto promotion, you deserve it, and I hope we can join you sooner or later.

    Frankthegas.
No actually. A shot on target is one which requires a save.
A shot that hits the crossbar is off target.
    Its not difficult.

westbrom did not threaten pompey one good long range effort off the bar that was it. brunt, benar and especially phillips were awful. still lots of empty seats your website promoting tickets still available 2 days prior to the game. why has your bored lowered ticket prices? where were those fans who went to wembley? only 20000 at the poorthorns against colchester? 2 trips to wembley 2 defeats and not even a goal for a consilation. geras going, hoefkens has slated the club and area never mind you got the pathetic diving i cant pass a medical so ill stay at WBA as your hero!!! dont say were not gracious we will try and beat bristol city to help your faltering season get back on track!!!

Albion & Barnsley played well at Wembley – Just could not score – It doesnt matter how pretty the football is – If you dont score you cant win!

The lad that missed the golden chance for Barnsley was made to feel the shame of missing his chance – the same can be said for the Albion players that missed theirs!

The fans of BOTH clubs were let down and the players didnt rise to the occassion!

It ceases to amaze us that fans can say “Well done” for losing against a poor Pompey side who were there for the taking – Old Arry must be laughing in his champers! his face during the game was a picture of nerves as he clucked and clucked throughout until the relief and joy at the final whistle!

ALL the waffle in the world wont change the results!

NB* What Odds Albion on 3 Consecutive losing games at Wembley?
