Wolves blog: My Soccer Saturday

Friday 4th April 2008, 8:35AM BST.

wolvesbadge.jpg

So, what will you be doing this Saturday in the absence of a Wolves game to attend? writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

My morning will consist of Soccer AM on Sky, and then early afternoon I will be flicking between Arsenal vs Liverpool again on Sky and the FA Cup Semi-final featuring Sandwell vs Pompey over on the Beeb.

As my missus will testify, even when I’m not attending a match in person, I’m glued to Sky Sports in the afternoon watching the brilliant Jeff Stelling present Soccer Saturday.

I also track closely the progress of my Premiership fantasy football players which I have a ridiculously unhealthy obsession with, surely I can’t be alone?

And come 5pm my footie day usual ends, unless I can sneak in another game upstairs on the second box.

Typically when Wolves have a fortnight off it’s a bit of a godsend.

We usually have a player or two coming back from injury or we are in such bad shape that a rest can sometimes help the team and let reflect on where they are going wrong.

The complete opposite is the case at the moment.

Wolves are in the best form of the season, albeit a season where we have struggled to find any semblance of form at all.

So what a pity we don’t have a game this weekend when confidence is running high through the team and, probably for the first time this season, through the majority of fans as well.

After our break we will probably be back outside the play-offs and have to squeeze in five games in 14 days, although I’m not sure when the last game in that sequence, the home fixture against Cardiff, is scheduled for.

The make or break fortnight will be full of twists, turns and excitement and each game will probably feel like a cup final.

We will have David Edwards back in contention in midfield, Breen available again and some good competition up front to play alongside SEB – our signing of the season.

And at least Mick McCarthy missed out on the dreaded ‘manager of the month’ award.

That ‘honour’ was bestowed on Phil Brown who has turned Hull City around from near relegation last season to genuine contenders for automatic promotion this time around.

I wish Albion all the best in the cup against Pompey, if nothing else it’s detracting them from their promotion charge, which is good news for us and the other teams in the top six.

If they get to the final they get £900k from the FA, which could buy them a Kightly bootlace or a SEB shin guard!

Whatever you are doing, have a good weekend.

Just remember, this is what June and July will feel like when the season is dead and buried.

Right, where’s that remote control.

Wolves fans have your say on what you do on quiet Saturday’s below

Nothing to do with the blog but I’m having a “discussion” with an Albion fan.

I say that Wolves played in some sort of tournament at Wembley in the 80′s and seem to recall us playing Everton? and I think Dennison scored and it finished 1-1.

    Can anyone help me?

Albion sold all their tickets on Wednesday I think. Not that bad really as they never went on general sale. I remember that Wembley tournament, I think it was 20 minutes each way matches and teams qualified through a strange system of being the most in-form teams in the 4 divisions. Dennison’s goal was a cracker.

Chill out! My comments about Albion in the blog were meant as tongue in cheek.

I really do wish Jarrod and all the Baggie fans a great day out tommorrow. I have already popped over to the other side to wish Jarrod all the best for the cup game.

I missed the name calling bit from my blog though, you’ll have to enlighten me?

Remember, I write about the Wolves. I’m not going to put my heart and soul into the Baggies. It’s a cracking achievement to reach a cup semi-final, but I’m hardly going to back slap too much.

And really does it matter, many supporters cannot afford to go to Cardiff and then Wembley in a week. I personally have a decent paid job, but with a mortgage & 2 kids with 1 on the way finacial restraints obviously take their toll.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I quite like watching Albion play. They’re an entertaining team. I’ve seen them against Charlton, Bristol Rovers and will watch them against Pompey tomorrow.

My felings are mixed. Of course, because they are the Albion, I don’t want them to win, but on the other hand the FA cup seems to be de-railing their league form!

One thigns for sure though…if Albion win tomorrow, they’ll be dead certs for the cup….

Oh and from the above blogg ” and the FA Cup Semi-final featuring Sandwell vs Pompey over on the Beeb”.

Now I accept “sandwell” isn’t the worst thing we get called on these pages – but its just un-necessary, and not like your blogger to be so childish. Having enjoyed crossing swords with Nathan Lloyd many times he usually stays above such things.
