Horror of pool death

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 11:45AM BST.

Shane OwooThe full horror of the gang attack which saw the drowning of Bilston teenager Shane Owoo was revealed today.

Police told how the 16-year-old, pictured, was killed  in a terrifying “punishment swim” following the court appearance of two men who admitted the manslaughter of Shane.

Both Marvin Walker and Christopher Lewis face sentencing later this month.

The former Moseley Park pupil was punched and kicked, thrown into nettles and forced to jump into the Lunt Pool in Bilston for a “punishment swim” after stealing a bike.

Onlookers described how Shane was pelted with stones and a branch was used to keep him from scrambling to safety.

Lewis, of St Russell’s Road, St Chad’s, Bilston, and Walker, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty on what was due to be the first day of their trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

Tobias Davies, 21, of Frost Street, Ettingshall, slapped Shane in the face before he was taken to the pool.

He admitted assault and the manslaughter charge against him was dropped.

It is not clear how the killers found out about the theft but detectives have now revealed how the two killers “frog-marched” Shane to the Lunt Pool in a journey taking up to 10 minutes.

Detective Inspector Simon Richards from West Midlands Police said: “They chose to find him and to assault him on the road. They then took him from the road to the pool. That took about eight to 10 minutes. They took him to that pool and they forced him to get into it.

“Shane could swim but he wasn’t a strong swimmer. He needed to get out and they didn’t allow him out. As a direct result, Shane died.”

Det Insp Richards praised people from the area for coming forward with evidence. Sentencing takes place on April 25.
