Fans get hands on the Cup

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 11:03AM BST.

wd2713998cup-1-dw-02.jpgAs football fever sweeps the region, fans were given the chance to get their hands on both the FA and European Cups at a village pub.

The replica trophies made an appearance at The Crown, in Claverley, with former Wolves star and FA Cup winner Gerry Harris.

Gerry played in the 1960 final which saw Wolves hammer Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at Wembley.

As tribute to their special guest, landlords Adrian Blower and Claire Bealey showed the match on the big screen in front of the 80 or so visitors. The event was to raise funds for Claverley Primary School and football fans could have their photographs taken with the cups for £5.

Mr Blower, who has been in charge of the High Street pub for 12 months, said the evening had been a great success.

The 38-year-old, whose sons Anthony and Adam had their pictures taken with the cups, said: “It has been brilliant, there was a smashing atmosphere.

“The cups were here for a couple of hours and people were really excited to see them.”

I remember being in the Molineux crowd when Gerry Harris made made his debut first-team appearance. A seasoned supporter behind me gave his considered opinion ‘He’s ‘arf-soaked – but ‘e’s accurate’. Thanks for that childhood memory.
