Beauty spot fees to rise

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 6:06PM BST.

Sandwell ParkDaytrippers in Sandwell are set to feel the pinch after new charges were introduced at some of the borough’s best loved beauty spots today.

Local people and tourists will now have to pay to get into Sandwell Park Farm, and motorists will also have to cough up to park at scenic Sandwell Valley.

Sandwell Council hopes the parking charges will bring in £27,000 each year and admission charges £72,000.

Library fines are also set to increase by 10 per cent from today.

The council has defended the decision, claiming income generated by the charges will mean better services in Sandwell which would in turn bring more people into the borough.

John Satchwell, parks and green spaces manager, said: “We try to keep charges down as far as possible but we do need to meet running costs.”

The plans were approved last month, and increases for guided walks, workshops and special events came into force in the borough today.

Parking fees at the Sandwell Show, which brings thousands of people to the borough each August, are also set to be increased.

Parking charges will not be brought in until later in the year.

However, it has confirmed that popular shows and events at museums and arts centres will cost more for some visitors. Families visiting Sandwell Park Farm will now pay £2, with adults paying £1 and children 50p to visit the attraction.

And charges for nature and guided tours at the farm will go up from £8.50 to £10 for families, in addition to the new parking costs.

Other increases include the hire of football pitches with changing rooms.

These will be raised for adult users to reflect the rise in energy prices, going up from £37.25 to £40 a season.

Well how about that, Sandwell Council cant do anymore to destroy the borough by making it look like a third world look alike, so they change their tactics and to drive people from the local beauty spots, they put up charges.

What has the electorate done to these useless tyrants?

Have they forgotten that they were put there to run the borough, but do you see them cleaning the streets? Do you see them repairing the roads? Do you see them supplying young children with recreational facilities? No, all they want to do is to attack the electorate and milk them for every pound they can get out of them.

How strange they believe in charging for parking for us residents, but allocated free parking for councillors at the Oldbury Council Building, but they are just like this Labour government, they believe that we should be taxed at every opportunity but dont believe that they should pay tax on their pensions etc.

The one ray of hope though, they are in the process of getting rid of that dictator in Zimbabwe, perhaps we can do the same with these bunch of hypocrites.

Increased charges to use Sandwell Valley will simply drive people further out of Sandwell. We already have to go out of the borough for everything else so why bother with the valley? Trips to the cinema, bowling alley,ice-skating and decent restaurants all have to be taken out of Sandwell. Talk of regeneration in the future does not help the families of today!

Why are council tax payers being asked to pay twice?

People who can barely afford to eat are being ripped off left, right and centre. This in one of the poorest parts of the country. The delay to the parking charge may be due to the fact that local elections are being held this year.

Despite the ever-increasing cost as well as the incessant PR stunts, Sandwell actually seems to be getting worse. I have been to better parts of Europe that get nowhere near the funding Sandwell milks out of its residents..why? Maybe it’s because their elected officials don’t bend over backwards to serve the minority at the expense of the majority. The cost of living here has risten astronomically and yet when it comes to wages, conditions and opportunitity..the council doesn’t appear to be at all interested beyond gutless promises.
