Gardeners’ appeal to keep the vandals out

Saturday 29th March 2008, 8:20AM GMT.

Allotments in a Black Country borough are being plagued by vandals burning down sheds and destroying greenhouses.

Bayer Street Allotments Association is asking North Dudley Area Committee for a grant to pay for fencing.

David Green, who runs the site, said problems had gone on for more than two years and left many wanting to move away. He said: “We have had sheds and green houses burnt down. They get in by cutting through the fencing. If we can get the money for tougher new fencing hopefully it will stop them.”

Mr Green said some of the members had taken to lying in wait for the offenders and had even caught some.

He said: “People are fed up with it and are now talking about leaving because they say they can’t afford to keep replacing them.”

The association has applied to the committee for £4,805.55 to pay for fencing.

The association has applied to the committee for £4,805.55 to pay for fencing.Councillors will decide whether to approve the grant from its budget at a meeting on Wednesday April 9 at Cotwall End Primary School, Cotwall End Road, Sedgley, at 6.30pm.

Other applications before councillors will be from Sedgley Town Centre management which wants £2,000 towards signage showing Sedgley is now a no-alcohol zone.

The ban was introduced earlier this month and means no alcohol is permitted on the streets of the town centre.

If the grant is approved police will provide match funding.

Baggeridge Social Welfare Centre has applied for £3,377 towards disabled toilets.

However, the committee has been recommended to defer the application because the organisation is based in a pub. Sedgley & District Age Concern has applied for £586.14 towards a photocopier, scanner, printer and fax along with connecting cable, toner cartridge and warranty.
