If growing up is all about fun, why is it just the girls who get to wear cool clothes? While stores selling childrenswear leave little girls spoilt for choice, the same can’t be said for little boys who are nowhere as lucky when it comes to getting a taste of big style.

Donna Baker is one of many mothers who found clothes for young boys tend to be less interesting than their female counterparts. She had no problem dressing her daughter Hannah in pretty and trendy outfits – but she struggled to find anything just as good for her son. So the mother-of-two from Streetly near Walsall decided it was time to take matters of fashion into her own hands – quite literally.

She designed her own fashion label and naming it, rather aptly, after her five-year-old son Guy.

Donna, a former insurance loss adjuster, and husband Mark, who gave up his job as a funeral director in West Bromwich, have been working on Guy for the past 18 months.

“I was always spoilt for choice when it came to finding great outfits for our daughter Hannah,” says Donna.

“But I was so frustrated and disappointed about what was on offer for boys.

“Clothes for boys seem so unimaginative and quite frankly, dull, and we wanted cool, colourful clothes for our son Guy,” said the 32-year-old.

So realising there was a gap in the market, the couple decided to give up their jobs and focus on creating a fashion label for boys.

“I didn’t have any experience in design. I previously worked in insurance and then ran a disco and karoake centre,” said Donna.

“But I do have experience as a mother and I have a real passion for what we are doing now.” The clothing range, which caters for boys aged from two to eight, is available by mail order, phone or on-line. “It’s been quite an effort getting to where we are now, but we are thrilled that we have at last launched our first collection. And I feel the name Guy fits the bill perfectly.”

Guy had his modelling debut for his parents, showing off some of the clothing range in a photoshoot for a catalogue.

So what does Guy think of his new found fame as a model? “Funnily enough, I think he finds it a bit embarrassing,” said Donna.

“I don’t think he’s too impressed – but that’s boys for you,” she laughed.

But there’s no fear that big sister Hannah, eight, is feeling left out. “Guy needed a bit of encouragement, but Hannah loves to get involved,” said Donna.

Which begs the question – will there be a clothing range for girls?

“At the moment we are concentrating on boyswear, but we may move into girlswear in the future,” she added.
