Satellite system to pinpoint buses
Tuesday 25th March 2008, 11:44AM GMT.
Buses throughout the West Midlands are to be fitted with new satellite tracking equipment so that their exact whereabouts can be pinpointed.
The move, which will cost millions of pounds, comes amid rising attacks on drivers in the region.
All 1,600 buses in the National Express West Midlands fleet are to be upgraded with the system within the next 12 months.
It will allow control room staff to pinpoint the location of a bus if it breaks down or if the driver needs to call for emergency assistance.
Police who are called in the event of an attack on a driver can be given exact co-ordinates of the bus.
And, if a bus breaks down, action can be taken sooner to repair and provide a replacement service. The steps are part of a wider upgrade announced by National Express which includes the rebranding of buses that currently carry the Travel West Midlands name.
There have been several attacks on drivers in the region in the past 12 months, and stones thrown at buses cost the company £500,000 a year in repairs.
The company warned earlier this year that a driver could be killed in such an incident.
Alex Perry, Midlands director for National Express, said: “We are renewing our radio system across the whole of our bus fleet.
“We will have instant geographic recognition.
“It will highlight where our vehicles are, 24 hours a day.
“This information can be transferred via our control room to other outside organisations like the police if there is a requirement,” Mr Perry added.
“This will be safer for drivers as any use of the radio will automatically recognise the location of the bus.
“It will also make for better management of the fleet, providing a more efficient bus service.”
National Express West Midlands is the new name for Travel West Midlands, which is having its logos and brand changed from this month.

At least they will see how all the buses come together!

Can they link this system up to bus stops so you know how long its going to be till the next bus arrives?

I regularly visit Brighton, where such a system exists Karen D, and it is phenominal. Little boards at each bus stop, list what buses are due, and how long before they actually arrive. It is amazing, you get to the bus stop, see that your bus is still 9 minutes away, and so you can pop into the shops safely knowing you won’t miss your bus (Unless there’s a queue in the shop)

Transport for London have a system whereby a dot matrix board attached to the ceiling of the bus shelter tells the queue what’s coming, when it’s arriving and in what order.
The buses and road are fitted with gidgets that send and receive signals.
However, that’s London and this is the West Midlands where the dot matrix board will be something else to vandalize and the buses are so poorly maintained that the gidgets will break down within a couple of months, the “engineers” won’t notice and passenger complaints will be routinely ignored.

We’ve got one of those boards at Wolverhampton Bus Station but it’s not updated regularly. We had the A2Z buses and they still showed on the board long after the service ceased. Early morning Saturday service is a joke. Plenty of empty 501 and 543 buses (or so it seems when you’re waiting for another bus. The timetable for the 513 on Bradmore Road going towards Warstones is way out.
I found the bus routes in Edinburgh easy to use on a visit some years back. At every bus-stop you were informed of the bus-fare to your destination.

Most bus stops here in the West Midlands have them but they will only show services from buses with the systems fitted. In Coventry we have some boards that display ? ? 5 mins which is ver confusing but that must mean they are not programmed properly, Network West Midlands is trying to sort this out and also replace older Bus stops (although i saw one that dated from the 80′s the other day!)
