Lay off keeper warns Mowbray

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 11:29AM GMT.

wd2234252albion-15-dh-13.jpgAlbion boss Tony Mowbray today threw his support behind Dean Kiely and backed the veteran keeper to blank out the Hawthorns boo-boys.

Kiely was the target for criticism from a section of Baggies fans during Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Leicester as the Baggies lost further ground in the Championship promotion race. But Mowbray believes the 37-year-old will laugh off any questions over his performances – questions the manager insists he has not heard.

“I haven’t detected it,” said Mowbray, who stuck with Kiely during criticism earlier in the season.

“Dean is long enough in the tooth to accept whatever comes his way. A few weeks ago, around the time of the Barnsley game (at Oakwell) there was a little bit of heat that I was aware of towards Dean. But I haven’t heard it in the last game or two.

“He responded after Barnsley with four clean sheets in five games and I have got no fears about Dean’s temperament or personality.”

Kiely is likely to come under increased scrutiny from fans as Czech keeper Michal Danek, who starred for the reserves on Monday, continues to settle into life in England.

But Mowbray has shown few signs that he is about to blood Danek in the crucial final weeks of the season and Kiely’s place seems secure barring injuries or a major loss of form.

The criticism directed towards Kiely at The Hawthorns has opened up a debate about whether Albion will be better off in their six away games than the three home fixtures.

But Mowbray has played down suggestions that the nerves in the crowd could affect his side badly on home turf. “All I know is that there are no easy games for anybody at any stage and I don’t feel or sense the pressure of playing at home,” said Mowbray.

“I would rather play every game at home but obviously you can’t. I understand that teams can go away and frustrate people but whether that is in our nature is probably another question.”

“I’m not sure about the away records of other teams this year but without being spectacular we have won a few games on the road this year and going away from home should hold no fears for us either.”

Funny thing is I’ve checked through all my newspapers & can’t find details of his sending off.
After Albion went behind,Kiely by all accounts, was woefully exposed as Albion pushed for an equaliser. He didn’t give away the Penalty & the 4th goal….well even Godden,Osbourne,Latchford & Hoult would’ve struggled to save it.
He doesn’t have many bad games for you as the league table & a FA Cup semi-final can bear testement.
I wish Wolves were playing the stylish, silky footie that West Brom are, with similar results.

I understand the fans not being confident about Keily but can we really afford to blood an unknown keeper to english football at such a crucial stage of the season? I would suggest not, Keily knows the game and the league so i think we should just get behind him and roar the Albion onto the promised land

Err… that will be us 5 points off top with 2 games inhand… hardly being left behind are we ??

We know we need to start winning again, and we have the players and manager to do just that – what we don’t need is a local paper undermining our efforts to put another local team in the premier league with this type of sensational writing.

Come on you baggies boys – lets lift our chins and look forward to the next match – we all know we are the best team in this league – we just need that confidence back.

Please allow me to apologise for my “foreign Post” as you call it.
Secondly,to their credit, most Albion & Wolves Fans don’t sink to the depths of others.
Some of the childish name calling I.E.Dingles/Steptoes coupled with Custard Bowl/Poorthorns & the “weem betta than yo” sort of attitude is laughable. And don’t get me started of the histories of both clubs.
Most of it is acceptable banter, but the rest…
Well the posters of that particular drivel should stay away from Electrical equipment like computers & concentrate thier childlike behaviour on things you do with papier mache, plastecine & crayons.
