Walsall blog: Nice one Dicky

forest2.jpgTrust me Richard you are worthy and there’s really no need to bow down to us! writes Walsall blogger Mark Jones.

Paying tribute to the noisy and enthusiastic away end at Forest was very gratefully received however – nice one.

I thought the chants of ‘Can you hear us Dicky Dosh?’ were spot on, part tongue-in-cheek/part indignant/part saying ‘don’t doubt us’ but never vicious, vindictive or personal.

And fair play to Dicky, he took it in the spirit it was intended. We are all Saddlers together and we do care.

In the 25 or so years I’ve followed Walsall away our support has never lacked passion, noise or appreciation when the boys on the pitch give their all.

It needs to be remembered that this isn’t a different group of people from the home support, so maybe there isn’t a simplistic answer to the issue of the Banks’s atmosphere.

It is a debate that needs to take place for sure but maybe not just as we are about to hit the business end of the season.

There was also the matter of a football match on Saturday.

Dear old Forest, they just can’t get three points off the Mighty Saddlers, no matter how hard they try.

Clayton back to his best, Nathan Tyson’s hilarious lack of aerial ability and, most importantly, a Walsall side that were determined to defend as a unit all contributed to a frustrating day for the once famous ones.

We gave as good as we got though.

There was Rhys Weston flashing one of those agonising crosses that cry out for any kind of connection across the home six yard box, Tommy creating panic on the back post from Eddy’s tremendous deep cross for the equaliser, we also hit the bar and had two cleared off the line.

Unfortunately at each of these precise moments, the poor unlucky Radio Nottingham reporter was momentarily distracted by dropping his pencil or whispering sweet nothings into John McGovern’s ear or something and he missed every single Walsall attack.

I think a draw was an ok result; it stopped the rot after two defeats and could be a good springboard for the next round of six pointers coming up.

So what if half the league are up our metaphorical backsides?

We are right in the mix with a decent enough goal difference and the chance to take points off the teams around us coming up.

Next stop the once famous and now just infamous Leeds United; a TV cameraman showing our Dicky on the pitch at Elland Road applauding the away fans round about quarter past seven on Saturday evening would be very pleasant sight.

Go for it boys!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the allocated seating at the Banks’ stadium doesn’t help the atmosphere. Back in the terraced days the loud lot congregated and would lead the rest of us into song. Maybe an allocating half the bottom tier behind the goal to people who want to sing, so they know where to go could help??? On an away day mostly you sit where you want and the singers amongst us gravitate to one another. Maybe something where a section of seating left open so people can sit where they like regardless of the number of the ticket is the way forward. The same people (with the odd exception of banned hooligans from their younger days in the 70s) go to the home as the away so why else are we so quiet at home??
