England legend Alan Shearer and TV presenter Adrian Chiles were joined by a special guest for a portion of their cross-country cycle ride – Wolves boss Mick McCarthy.

He pedalled from Burton Upon Trent to Muckley Corner for a 19-mile stint, before taking a turn towards Wolverhampton for morning training.

Shearer and Chiles’ journey from Newcastle to London raised more than £370,000 and took in a total of 335 miles, including a stop at The Hawthorns yesterday.

Along the way, Shearer and Chiles faced gale-force winds and rain and a series of mishaps that saw both men take a tumble from their bikes at different times. They kept themselves going with a series of quiz questions and a diet of cheese and ham sandwiches and flapjack.

Finally, after cycling for a total of 26 hours, they pulled into Television Centre in Shepherds Bush yesterday having raised at least £371,065. In front of the TV cameras last night, the former Newcastle striker admitted it had been a tough 26 hours on the road. He said: “It was very difficult but we were always confident.

“I am cream-crackered now, I promise you. This is one of the hardest things I have ever done, we are on our last legs.

Adrian added: “The support has been fantastic and we had five riders with us and we couldn’t have done it without them. I’m weary to the very core of my being, but my backside is not feeling too bad.”

All the money will be spent helping vulnerable people in the UK and across the world.

While in West Bromwich, the pair entered past the Jeff Astle gates, as part of an impressive convoy totalling seven cyclists, four vans, a motorbike and a huge portable road sign weaving its way down the country.

In the early hours presenters Patrick Kielty and Claudia Winkleman announced a total of £19,640,321.
