Thug who attacked horse jailed

A thug who repeatedly hurled a butcher’s meat cleaver at a horse which later had to be put down was today sent to a young offenders’ institution for five months.
Matthew Corfield, pictured, aged 19, of Higgs Road, Wednesfield, laughed as he inspected the 12-inch by five-inch blade for blood, the court was told earlier.
Co-accused Alex Lister, aged 19, of Olinthus Avenue, Wednesfield, who chased the horse and tried to film two men including Corfield, running after it, with his mobile phone, was told to carry out 180 hours of community work.
He pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal on the basis he was not aware of the meat cleaver.
Maggie, a 19-year-old mare, suffered horrific injuries following the attack at Essington Hall Farm, Essington on April 13 last year.
Corfield, who also admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, had been drinking with friends including Lister earlier.
Maggie’s heartbroken owner Davina Bowyer, aged 47, from Essington, told the Express & Star a major part of her life had been taken away and that she loved the horse, which she had raised for 18 years.
At Cannock Magistrates Court Lister were also ordered to pay costs.
Chairman of the bench Mirendra Raval told Corfield: “This was a nasty incident – a prolonged attack on an innocent horse.”

Sounds like a clear repeat of the “Great Wyrley Atrocities” of the early 20th century where a Wyrley solicitor was erroneously sentenced to 7 years in prison for attacking horses. The book “Arthur and George” is based around Conan Doyle’s actions to free George Edalj who was innocent.
Funny that the sentence was 7 years then and 5 months now !

5 months is a total joke, and as for the court costs!!! well what about some sort of compensation payable to the owner?
Corfield is only one of them that was caught, what about the others that were there with him and Lister??

As this was such a “nasty incident”, as quoted, why didn’t the “nasty man” get a “nasty sentance” to go with it, hardly punishing him for his crime, he will be out after about a month for “good behaviour”, he probably knows how to work the system, has he apologised, or shown remorse, I doubt it!

Absolute joke.5 months of which he’ll serve half if hes a good boy. Young offenders institute so lots of group hugs and plaaystation time.
My other half was talking to a prison officer client the other day who has had enough, prisoners have more rights than the officers and they know it. Prisoners are release early on the quite etc its a joke.
I wonder if the sentence would have been the same if the horses owner was an MP for example.

I can’t believe he only got 5 months, what is this country coming to when attacking a horse in this way only gets 5 months. He obviously does not care as he was laughing throughout the proceedings. In my opinion he has no remorse and no care for what he did so lock him up and never let him out.

Since when has someone over 18 ( classed legally as an adult ) warranted a “young offenders” order. He should be dealt with as an adult even though he is a moron. Mind he was no better at 14 ( personal experience) and will be no better on release. The apple never falls far from the tree !

Davina’s life is shattered and someone, somewhere has to realise that the public will not tolerate this mindless, violence. We are sick to death of seeing these sickening acts over and over again and still there is no deterent ?!
He is 19 and yet has the protection of a youth offenders prison… holidays / days out / sport …. i cannot take this in. Let him out for a day with animal lovers and we can decide what he deserves.

We see these “beasts” being given psychological evaluation, reabilitated and allowed to roam the streets in a society which as supposed to have grown, supposed to show more compassion and yet… five months for cruelly attacking an animal, a defenseless victim. Victims (animal or human) continue to be victimized and the monsters allowed to walk among us. A dog bites someone they get put down. A monster butchers and tortures an animal but thats okay. Humans are supposed to know better, animals don’t. If they are “sick” then put the ******* down like the animals who bite. I am sick of do gooders getting perverts off who rape and murder children, who go around attacking animals, old people and others who cannot defend themselves. The sickest part of it is. AGAIN the victims and taxpayers have to pay for these monsters to live.

One final note: Fox hunting. Only reason it exists is because of the rich and powerful participate. No other reason. If farmers need to protect their land and livestock then there are more humane ways of doing it than a pack of vicious dogs ripping the poor creature apart after being terrorised by a pack of vicious half-breeds with snotty noses… just rich bloodthirsty rodents at best.

In response to comment number 35 you do not know what you are talking about!!! I was in court and there was no remorse from Corfield!! He committed the crime and so must pay the consequences (be that prison or hate mail). Corfield only held his hands up as there was too much evidence against him!! How about leaving a horse there to die and not calling anyone!! He had many opportunities to plead guilty along the way and didn’t. It was even heard in court that he called one of witnesses and asked them to say it was not him!!! As for his family, his dad didn’t seem to be suffering too much when he turned to Davina in court and said “I hope you are happy now”. So next time you decide to post a comment in their favours, make sure you have the full facts!!!

Meddled with rich folk? Are you completely stupid? There are people that own horses who are wealthy i.e. show jumpers and race horse owners and there are people like Davina Bowyer who just kept her horse as pets – what the hell has money got to do with what your friend has done?
Your friend Matt, put Maggie through a whole night of terror and agonising pain. He cut her up and left her to suffer all night.
She was lying in a sea of her own blood when she was found in agony.
If you do know the REAL Matt, as you say, then you will protect yourself by staying away from him, he is a dangerous man!

You obviously weren’t in court – AGAIN. Matt’s own cousin made a statement saying that Matt contacted him and asked him to dispose of the knife. The court has ordered the knife to be destroyed now.
AND – there was smiling in court today, we all had a good smile as Matt Corfield was led away in cuffs!

Personally, I hope the people that did this ARE suffering, I hope they are full of remorse and that what they have done messes up their lives. Just like they have messed up Davina. I don’t care whether they showed remorse in court or not, they shouldn’t have done it in the first place.

As a horse owner I cannot describe how revolted and angry this makes me feel. Horses are prey animals – they need to escape from danger… these VILE VILE thugs trapped this
horse for what? their own fun? What a pity that a powerful horse’s instincts don’t
drive it to turn around and attack…we would have all cheered if they had been kicked and trampled to death!

Remorse???? As Corfield was led away he was shaking his head as if he couldn’t believe it – THEN, his dad turned to Davina and said “are you satisfied now”.
They didn’t look or sound very sorry!
His mother shouted “we love you son” – HOW COULD YOU LOVE THAT? Sorry but if I did something only hald as bad as what he did – my parents would beat the life out of me, I wouldn’t have even made it to court.
