Fry to be star at fundraiser
Tuesday 11th March 2008, 11:30AM GMT.
Larger-than-life football personality and former Birmingham City manager Barry Fry will be adding some star quality to a charity evening being staged in memory of a Black Country steel worker.
Mr Fry will be entertaining crowds with tales about his colourful career during the fundraising evening at Springvale Social Club, in Millfields Road, Bilston.
More than 250 people are expected to pack into the club for the event – the eighth annual fundraiser staged by Tividale-based MG Steel.
The crowds will also be entertained with a comedian and raffle on the night.
The event has been organised in memory of 58-year-old steel worker John Highfield who died of cancer in December.
Keith Millinson, one of the organisers of the event, said: “We are hoping to raise around £3,000 on the night.
“We have done this for the past eight years, raising around £20,000 for different charities in total.
“Barry Fry is a great character and it should be a wonderful night again.”
Last year guests were entertained by colourful Liverpool goalkeeping legend Bruce Grobbelaar who told them tales of his career in professional football.
He entertained them to raise money in memory of ex-Halesowen and Lye footballer Paul Hickman, who died of motor neurone disease in 2005.
