Motorists and residents in Compton face more misery after temporary traffic lights were installed as part of an ongoing £400,000 road improvement scheme.

The signals, installed at the junction of Henwood Road and Bridgnorth Road yesterday, will be in place for the next few days. They will be in operation between 9.30am and 3.30pm to minimise the impact on traffic flow. The lights will enable work to be carried out on improving the footpaths and lighting along both Compton Road and Bridgnorth Road.

The village has faced huge tailbacks in recent weeks, some stretching back as far as The Mermaid public house, because of four other sets of roadworks in the surrounding area – in Wightwick Bank, Whitmore Reans, Castlecroft Road and Aldersley Road.

Councillor Joan Stevenson, who represents the Tettenhall Wightwick ward, said she was resigned to more delays.

“The lights will cause problems, but I think we’re all getting used to it by now,” she said. “While most motorists will be irritated by the lights, I think they accept that at least something’s being done to try and alleviate the problem.

“Traffic management in Compton is extremely difficult at the best of times and we’ll just have to put up with this. It’s one of the worst junctions this side of Wolverhampton and I would award a prize to anyone who could improve the situation here.”

Work is continuing on the A41 Wergs Road in Tettenhall as part of a four-week long resurfacing project.

The first phase has now been completed with the second due to get under way today.
