Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Wolves chief left seething
Wednesday 5th March 2008, 1:50PM GMT.
Seething Mick McCarthy was not in the mood for talking after seeing his team throw away the chance to beat ten man Southampton at Molineux.
The Wolves boss chose not to dwell on the display of referee Colin Webster in case he got into trouble and said there were scant positives to take from the 2-2 draw.
He had earlier warned his post-match press conference that he was still too angry to talk about the key incidents in the game – but he made his disappointment at Wolves’ slapdash defending plain.
“To say I’m not pleased is an understatement,” he said.
“We started dreadfully in the game. For some reason we didn’t start as we normally do, trying to put the ball in among the front men and behind them.
“I think we invited pressure and invited them into it which made it a more even game. It was a very scrappy game.
“They’ve got a new manager in and you can see the passion and determination he brings into it. His team have mirrored that and made it difficult to us.
“Sylvan does what he does really well. He took his two chances. Then to have conceded is unforgivable, it really is.”
The manner of the equaliser also irked McCarthy, with the Wolves boss desperately disappointed that they conceded a free header.
And he felt they should have done better in the run up to the goal too – with too many individual errors contributing to the goal.
“I’m not pleased it ended up with a corner.
“In the build up I think we should have competed better for the header from their goalkeeper’s kick, then there was a little scramble from the throw-in and it ended with a corner.
“We’ve just not picked him up from the corner. I know there has been substitutions but everyone has their jobs and we have one more man than they do.”
On the issue of the debated penalty McCarthy resisted the temptation to tear into the ref.
“It wasn’t a penalty. If there was contact then he’s outside the box,” he said.
Those incidents livened up a poor game in which Wolves didn’t register a single shot on goal until just before the hour mark.
And McCarthy didn’t seek to sugar coat either the quality of the contest or his players.
“The game was rubbish – it was awful for an hour,” he added.
“We get our goal and suddenly it all kicks off and explodes with a penalty decision that shouldn’t have been a penalty.
“Then we have a sending off and it’s all very strange. But we should have won the game.”
The draw leaves Wolves four points short of the play-offs, but McCarthy is sticking to his policy of not talking about the league table.
“I’m not going to get wrapped up in it but we should be in a better position – we should have two more points,” he said.
“We’re going to have to try and find them somewhere else now.”
And Wolves defender Kevin Foley admitted the team were “devastated” to see victory snatched from their grasp in the dying seconds.
And Foley – who gave away a disputed penalty to give Saints their equaliser – reckoned the players had tossed away a golden opportunity to claim all three points after a performance that was distinctly below par.
“All the lads were devastated at the end,” Foley said.
“I was very surprised with the penalty decision. When I heard the whistle I thought he was blowing up for a dive or something.
“I just stood my ground and went shoulder to shoulder and even their lad said he couldn’t believe it was a penalty.
“I think the ref’s had a bit of a nightmare there.”

HOW FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT WORKS
1. The manager bought the players
2. He coached them
3. He picked them
4. He dictated the tactics
5. He takes the glory
6. He takes the blame
7. He is paid mega-bucks to achieve success
8. He is expected not to insult the fans
Blaming the players just is not good enough! There is only one culprit here, he should just stand up like a man and admit his failures. He might get some respect for that.
OUT OF DARKNESS COMETH PAUL INCE

he’s got to go,but before he does, can he tell his mate potter not to duck when defending corners.

Hmm, reality hurts, look at the stats! Southampton have had 59 goals scored against them. Ok, thats the most in the whole league!
MM shouldn’t be upset we tossed away a victory he should concentrate on the fact that we should have had ten in the net! What a complete muppet, first he blames the players, then the fans for posting reality..never his fault!
This dude must have no mirrors in the dressing room… if he did he would notice that its him!
what the hell could paul ince acheive ? he has allready taken 2 well paid years out the club it was money for old rope, at least irwin knew his time was up! if mm leaves then there is only big sam worthy
Report abuse
blah blah blah same old blah blah, get him out, new manager in so he can take on board what he has to play with next season in the championship. Its time we made Mr Morgan know how the majority of the fans feel, weve paid our money so lets have our say. Muppet is being polite

Football is meant to be entertaining, win lose or draw. Last night was dire, directionless drivel and EVERYONE involved should hang their head in shame.
I was not enjoying the game even when we were ahead, the only bright side is that there is at least one team worse than us, Southampton, but saying that we couldn’t beat them with an extra man and only 20 seconds left, pathetic…
Report abuse
People keep banging on ( & yes, I am guilty in the past)about Big Sam, Paul Ince & various other names.
Let’s face it, we’re stuck with MM till the end of the season ( or till promotion is mathematically impossible, whichever comes soonest).
What makes you think the above named will want to come here?
Why not go for Mourino….or heavens help us,Tony Mowbray?
At least they know what it’s like to be on top looking down!

Ince fires people up, so I think he’s got managerial quality about him. Just look at Macclesfield, he took over and saved them from the drop. Then took over at the MK Dons, they look on their way up into League 1. He’s already putting together quite a CV.
I do not want Mick to be sacked…yet. He should at least have until the end of the season to play all his cards, if by then, nothing has been achieved then perhaps Morgan should consider a change. I agree with (9), I think Big Sam would be an ideal choice. But give him longer than Newcastle did.
Regarding last nights game, why Eastwood is never played from the start is a mystery. He needs the games to get his confidence and form up.

Sorry guy’s don’t mean to rub salt into festering wounds.I do agree with many of you that defeat does always seem to be down to someone else. Some of his pronunciations border on the hysterical as do some of his team selections.

Someone needs to tell MM that not even a top manager with decades of successful tenure ever earns the right to abuse the fans and call them names. He is not the club, neither are the directors, nor even the nominal owner. We, the fans are the club. We pay his wages and if we were not here there would be no club.
If his comment was accurately reported it suggests he is an arrogant, insensitive, egotistical man who honestly believes he is god.
So now we know what MM really stands for. Megalomaniac Mick.

J Bothroyd – released
H Potter – Liverpool reserves
D Edwards – Division 1 experience only
K Foley – Division 1 experience only
K Kyle – Coventry reserves

I could go on. I don’t Boo at matches i support the team but do we all expect to do well with no quality being brought. We’d have done better paying all the money spent on these players and buying 2 or 3 quality, experienced players to back up the youngsters and bring them on.

6. Out of darkness
McCarthy wouldn’t ever stand up and admit his failures, that’s not in his egoistical nature. He has “yes” men around him, but always ends up in the same sorry state. But, somehow he always finds another victim to live of for another few years, before his inadequacies find him out again.
That time has arrived at Wolves, and the only question now is when?
MCCARTHY IS A DEAD MAN WALKING!
In the old days Wolves kept managers for at least 10 years on average. But they were a different breed from what we have seen in the last 20-30 years. They were already club members, not free-loaders looking for the next victim.
Looking inside the club for the next manager was an old Liverpool approach that they learned from Wolves.
Why and when did Wolves stop using this approach. The free-loaders, just passing through, take loads of our dosh and don’t do us any good anyway!
There is an ex-Wolves captain, making a name for himself as a manager. Mr Morgan, he has already publicly stated that he wants to come back as the Wolves manager.
Paul Ince, one of the greatest footballers and potential managers of our time, is waiting for a phone call from Mr Morgan. Will Morgans’ ambitions extend to turning Wolves into a great Premiership club, or just look at milking his small Championship club investment?

If I had failed as badly as McCarthy in my job I would expect to get the sack. Somehow, this arrogant twerp continues insulting the fans and blaming the players for his failures, and expects us to want him to continue managing our beloved Wolves.
Seems to me that the mighty Merlin should get some humility and apologize to the Wolves fans for his arrogant rantings and attempts to spin the pathetic year he has had here. We are not fools, we saw that he didn’t really care and was just putting in time before the move elsewhere to the next mug.
It was apparent mid-season that something was wrong with the job offers from Ireland and Korea, or somewhere like that. No immediate denial and a half-hearted attempt to cover up whatever was going on. Maybe, one day it may all come out, or there again a secrecy clause in a contract may stop that happening.
At this time in our grief, can we give some thought to the real victims of this years tragedy. Our academy hopefuls who have had their lives and careers hopelessly messed up by the outgoing manager.
How can we make it up to them, and regain their confidence in our club?
I feel that Mr Morgan should ensure that they all get places in the team from now to the end of the season, let them show us what they could have done. The season is lost, so they can’t do any worse, and I think that they might even surprise us all, like they did last season!
If McCarthy refuses to co-operate, then do whatever is necessary to make it happen.
We owe it to the academy kids, they are our future!

I see all the Sandwell numpties are out in force. There’s no doubt Wolves fans are fickle but weren’t some of the Albion fans questioning Mowbray when they lost the play off final? The fact is all clubs have supporters that are quick to turn whenever things go wrong. Clubs demand short-term success, a policy that have never proved successful at Molineux during the 14 years that I’ve supported the club. That said, keeping McCarthy on board may not be the answer if we continue to play so poorly. Whatver happens, Morgan has a tough decision regarding Wolverhampton Wanderers’ future. Up the Wolves.
