Villa blog: Fan problems

Tuesday 4th March 2008, 8:26AM GMT.

villagoal2.jpgIt was a weekend of mixed emotions for Villa fans, writes Villa blogger Gregg Williams.

While we can be pleased with the efforts of the players on Saturday, the last minute goal we conceded was heartbreaking.

As the away side, playing the team sitting top of the league, I was impressed with our pressing game and threat on the break, but the equaliser had a sad air of inevitability about it.

As lucky as our opening goal was, we created the best chances in the game and Gabby, Ashley Young and Super Marlon could all have secured the three points.

There was controversy too, surrounding the behaviour of our away support.

Obviously I can’t condone the ‘Eduardo’ song that was sung by Villa fans at the game, but to expect sensitivity from passionate football fans packed on the terraces with a few beers down them is always going to be expecting too much.

If memory serves Arsenal fans have been criticised in the recent past for singing songs relating to the Holocaust at Spurs fans, so I think they should get a bit of perspective before jumping on their high horses.

It was, after all, just a chant.

Nobody died, of course it was a horrible injury but you’ll struggle to find a more merciless audience than a football crowd.

Down the years I’ve seen games on TV and live where players have taken stick for alleged infidelity, drug taking, their sexuality, imprisonment of relatives… the list is endless.

I even remember Blues fans sang about Dion Dublin breaking his neck while he was at Villa.

I’m sure Eduardo has more important things to think about than the chants of a few hundred Villa fans and if I were an Arsenal fan I’d be more worried that the small minority inside the Emirates could be heard at all when the majority should have been getting behind their team.

To be honest I’m far more concerned with reports of bad behaviour outside the ground.

From what I’ve heard some of our supporters acted more like the arrogant hordes of Man Utd’s travelling support, with the police being forced into making a number of arrests.

This is troubling, and out of character for us.

I relish any opportunity I get to take in an away game and I have never seen anything like what seems to have happened on Saturday.

I hope the main perpetrators will be punished and this will end up being an isolated incident rather than the start of a trend.

I’m all for taking thousands of fans wherever we go, but if this sort of behaviour becomes a trademark for us I would be very disappointed.

I was at the game on Saturday and yes chants where would towards Eduardo’s injury. But it’s just banter. Liverpool fans still sing about Alan Smith’s injury when he broke his leg (how long ago has that been??).

The sick thing is that Arsenal fans have said villa fans were singing about the death of Sagna brother, which I can confirm…. ARE NOT TRUE! Chanting about someones injury yeah is pushing the mark. But, chanting about someones death is SICK. If fact which of these is worse:
    * The chant on Saturday about Eduardo’s injury?
    * Chanting about a manager’s background?
    OR
    * The Anti Semitic chants which go on between certain clubs??

I think you’ll find the third one is worse and people should get a grip! It’s not like the bloke lost his leg or isn’t going to play again. At the end of the day he’ll play and if it was us, Man U, Newcastle or Halesowen Town the chants would have come up anyway!

    Albion fan in peace…

Villa fans are getting a bad reputation now …

First Harry Rednapp says you were shouting vile things at him (you call it banter), then you are singing about a career threatening injury (more banter). If there were any chants about the death of Sanga’s brother (and you can’t hear ALL the chants in a ground) then its appalling.

Will ANY villa fan have the bottle to post here and admit thats its not acceptable ?

I was on talk sport the other day with regards with the same issue Happy_baggie has posted.

I said yes on it was pushing the mark with chants such as that of Eduardo’s. But sadly it’s football, I even said to Wrighty that it was happening back in his day and even Ian Wright agreed with me and said that if the fans don’t like what they hear then they should drown them out!

To say there was 57,000 Arsenal fans at the game I’ve never been to a ground were the fans don’t even get behind their team. I’ve heard more noise at a Halesowen vs West Brom game at The Grove.
