Wolves boss to stick with formation
Friday 29th February 2008, 11:25AM GMT.
Mick McCarthy is set to persevere with one up front for tomorrow’s must-win clash with Colchester.
Wolves used a 4-5-1 formation to good effect against Crystal Palace last week and the vastly improved performance has given McCarthy food for thought ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Essex.
“The performance and win last week has given me something to think about.
“It did work well and it’s something we will consider.
“People say it’s 4-5-1 but it’s an attacking formation and something we could develop.
“And even as the away team we had a good few chances and defensively it makes us stronger and harder to beat.
“If we go away from home a clean sheet is always a good starting point.”
Wolves used the same system in the ill-fated FA Cup game at Cardiff a fortnight ago but McCarthy was forced to scrap the formation after their disastrous start.
The Wolves boss felt he had seen signs that it was beginning to work at Ninian Park and was reluctant to get rid of it despite criticism hurled his way after that game.
“It’s bizarre because the formation played at Palace was the same as the one we started with at Cardiff but we were 1-0 down after a minute and two down after 10 minutes so we had to change it,” he said.
“But I actually thought in between those two goals we were getting more possession and starting to get into the game.
“It makes me laugh with tactics – they are great when you are winning and a pile of nonsense when you are losing.”
Meanwhile, McCarthy has allowed young striker Liam Hughes to join Steve Bull’s Stafford Rangers.
“We’ve allowed Liam to go to Stafford. He should learn something there, being managed by one of the greatest goal scorers in the club’s history after all,” he said.

I am glad Mad Mick saw signs of the 4-5-1 formation starting to work at Cardiff (this man is a complete lunatic)becuase I certainly didn’t. I would also say that although the team played much better at Palace the game had 0-0 written all over it until the two wonder strikes from Gray and Kyle.Oh well only another dozen or so potential embarassments before the end of the season

Funny how many games I have watched that have had 0-0 written all over them until some scores, and how many wonder strikes have come out of games that would have been 0-0 without them.
Another pointless comment from someone who could manage our club better than McCarthy.

playing 4-5-1 makes some sense when playing a difficult away game.
Colchester is not one of these, put some stikers on Idiot

Never stops, does he? Another dig at the fans, so exasparated after one of the worst team efforts I have ever seen.
Nothing worked that day! The man just makes it up as he goes along. Bought most of the squad and doesn’t know what is his best team! Just doesn’t know what he’s doing.
MCCARTHY OUT! COME ON YOU WOLVES!

Remember, you heard it here first!
McCarthy has decided to play Breen on the right in place of Kites. With his outstanding pace, he is just the man to confuse the Colchester defence. More to the point, he always puts in a shift!
Mighty Mick was quoted as saying, “It makes me laugh with tactics – they are great when you are winning and a pile of nonsense when you are losing. Let’s see what they make of this one!”

Is he a complete idiot? We win ONE game because of some cracking goals NOT his tactical skills and suddenly he is a worldbeater who can take all the credits for the results. So when we lose it’s the player or the fans who are to blame, but when we win he is the one to take credit.

I no wolves are terrible at the moment and i no a few people need to be fired. but there still here so stop willing them to get worse and jus get behind them and see if we can do it. you all winge about the football wolves play being depressing, the fans are worse! if we get behind the lads maybe it will give them a confidence boost the desperately need. think about that!

yes Mad MM good statement, that about clean sheets, he was talking about the first 2 Mins of the game

Calm down lads, it’s just a wind up.
No manager would sign half a dozen strikers and then play a 4-5-1 against a relegation threatened side.

Haven’t you ever heard of sarcasm? A statement like Rumours Breen one sounds so like the rubbish that McCarthy spouts that it might just be true!

Windsor Wolf you are typical of the happy clappers who are prepared to accept mediocrity as standard.

A clean sheet at home the next time would be a start….4-5-1 and hit them on the break after 70 minutes. It works like a dream.

I thought MM always went for a 1-9-1 formation?

If all of you on here are so obviously upset at the way the club is being run, then there is an easy solution. Don’t bother turning up, its obviously making you upset, and your not turning up to support the team so why bother.
I don’t agree with everything that is said and done at the club, but at the end of the day I give 100% to support the team. The division mongers among us are mearly undermining the efforts of all involved with the club.
But then again you know what opinions are like, and no-one likes to see other peoples

10- Wileszie, Prawn sandwiches anyone? I cannot even begin to think what the daily Mail were thinking when they awarded us an award for being the Whingiest fans. Where would they even get that idea from? I bet that if we win all of the six next games there would still be those that said “Mick Out” because we won, but FREDDY didn’t play. If one of them were to leave the club, Mick would not be my first choice. Eastwood is one of the most idle players ever to pull on a Wolves shirt. He makes Mark Kennedy look like the energizer bunny. I cannot believe Wolves fans think he is “a proven striker at this level.” In his last 51 FULL games in the Championship he has scored fourteen goals, five of those from the penalty spot. That is nine from open play. One goal every five games. That is a worse goals per game record than any of our other strikers at the club in their last 51 full games in the Championship. Why the hero worship? Bully, I can understand. He was class. I could understand Kenny Miller to a certain extent, because he was well ahead of Eastwood on goals per game at this level. It seems odd to me that laziness, bad team ethic, whinging to the papers and a poor scoring record is all you need to get on at the Wolves. People say that he hasn’t had a fair chance. 10 full games, and 11 with at least a half hour can’t be misconstrued as not being given a fair chance. “He was dropped when he was flying,” I hear you say. He was NOT dropped. He came back with a niggly injury, and was, according to himself, “exhausted” after a lot of travelling with Wales. The next game, which was against Hull, he played. (HE WAS ABSOLUTELY DIRE, and was then rightly dropped. He missed one game, and was brought back again. Once again, he failed miserably. After that, there were other strikers playing better, and trying harder.

My word. There is so much negativity by some on here. Please think objectivly for 1 minute and without emotion.
4-5-1 is a great formation if played correctly. It worked well last season for us away and I do not know why we do not play it more.
For those who say it is a negative formation may I remind you that a team who is renound for playing attacking football is also playing 4-5-1 (Al***n). When they played us at there place they played 4-5-1.
Please stop picking on every little thing McCarthy does. He has picked a team to win a game. We won a crucial game last week, why break the flow.
COME ON YOU WOLVES.
One more thing. Eastwood. How many times as Eastwood come off the bench this season I would say about 10 times. In those 10 appearances from the bench how many goals as he scored?
Kevin Kyle. Played 2 off the bench 2 starts goals 1. More to come from Kyle. Mick will be proved right and I cant wait.
